Bob lived a long and colorful life. He certainly was one of my most distinctive professors. Sometimes, he would call me by what my name would actually be in German or put me in opposition to the other students. But, that was OK, because he knew I could handle it.

He was my professor and “mentor’” at Wright State. He was tough—I remember the
‘Pop’ essay quizzes which I hated. But he taught me to think critically and to write which served me well throughout my career. He was an amazing professor and an amazing person.

Robert and I met at Dorothy Lane Market where he shopped for some specific items he enjoyed. On his visits to the store, he shared many stories about his life, especially his World War 2 experiences. He gifted me one of the books he co authored, Common Warfare, and sent me a get well card when I was off work for a broken leg. Robert was kind and considerate. I considered him my friend. My sincere sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Prof. Thobaben was my teacher in two political science classes at Wright State. He was a great teacher and a great guy. I had the pleasure of seeing him a few times after I graduated, as recently as 2019 when we attended a memorial service for his faculty colleague and another former teacher of mine, James Walker. My condolences to his family.
