Grady, Thomas Joseph
The Honorable Thomas J. Grady- Thomas Joseph Grady was born in Springfield, Ohio April 12,1941. After graduation from Catholic Central High School, he earned a bachelor's degree from Cleveland State University in 1963, and a juris doctorate from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1968. Early in his legal career, Tom served as a trial attorney for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in Washington D.C. (1968–1973), then for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (1973–1976) where he also advised the U.S. Attorney General. After returning to Springfield and working in a private practice, Tom married Maureen (Glenn) Charters in 1980 and became step father to her three children–Michael Charters (deceased), Anne Charters, and Elaine Charters (deceased). In 1988, he was elected judge on the Ohio Second District Court of Appeals, served on the Supreme Court Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure, and the Civil Rules Committee of the Ohio Judicial Conference, as well as a board member for Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline and the Commission on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court. Judge Grady was also an adjunct faculty member of the University of Dayton School of Law. Following 24 years, he retired at the end of 2012. Tom was preceded in death by his stepson Michael G. Charters, daughter Elaine Charters Lunne, and his brother John Grady. He leaves behind his wife, Maureen Grady, sister Karen Murphy, sister Marianne Smith, daughter Anne Charters Cata (Ceferino), son-in-law Douglas Lunne and grandchildren: Michael Cata (Sarah), Emily Cata Grad (Ryan), Andrew Cata (Kate), Caroline Lunne, Marie Lunne, and John Lunne, five great-grandchildren, nephews Jason Szemprich and Ryan Murphy, and many friends and colleagues. He was an avid reader, historian, dog-lover, and master of trivia. Services will be held Wednesday September 24th at St. Francis Catholic Church (6245 Wilmington Pike, Dayton, OH 45459). Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m. held, with Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. The burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery St. Kateri Preserve in Dayton, Ohio.
