William Sherk Obituary

SHERK, William McKay Age 85, of Kettering, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Known for his charm, humor and twinkling, blue eyes, Bill was born December 16, 1931 in Dayton, OH to physician Edgar A. and Willa (McKay) Sherk. A 1949 graduate of Oakwood H.S.. He took his intellect to Ohio Wesleyan (B.S. '53; Sigma Phi Epsilon) after which he took a 3,500-mile, two-month road trip around the country with his friend Spider. Safely, back in Ohio, he attended University of Cincinnati where he not only earned his medical degree ('57), but earned the love of a young, nursing student Maridel K. Travis whom he married that June. He would go on to send his wife flowers every year on the anniversary of their first date as that was truly the beginning of it all. After serving in the Air Force at Tyndall AFB, he settled in Oakwood with his young family, and began a successful medical practice. He treated his patients with the utmost compassion and care. Retiring in 1993 after delivering 1000's of babies, he enjoyed life by summering in Ellsworth, MI, travelling the world, driving fast cars and boats, eating wonderful food and drink, encouraging his children to do their best, playing tennis, reading, doing crossword puzzles and fishing around the world. He specially loved fishing with his lifelong friend, Bill Cass, Sr. He was a member of the Montgomery County Medical Society, AMA and Christ United Methodist Church. He passed away from complication of Alzheimer's on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Becky. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maridel; Sister, Nancye Schooley; sons: William, Jr. (Joni), Arik (Debbie), Chris, Stuart (Julie) from Cary, NC, Derek, daughter: Kirsten (Robert King); Grandchildren: William, III (Miriam), Grace, Robert, Thomas, Audrey, Steven, Isabel, Adam, Ian, Becket, McKay; Great-grandchild: William, IV; and nephew and nieces. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00pm on Friday, June 9, 2017 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Rd., Kettering. A private, family only committal service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 31 W Whipp Rd, Dayton, OH 45459 or to The Oakwood Schools Foundation, P.O. Box 351, Dayton, OH 45409. Dr Sherk delivered my 40 year old son and my 36 year old daughter by c-sections. My doctor was Woods. I was scared to death on having C-SECTIONS, however with both of these Sections Dr Sherk said all of the right things and was wonderful. Was always proud to have had De Sherk as MY OBGYN.

Dr. Sherk was a wonderful person. I had the pleasure of working for him. He delivered most of my nieces and nephews and saw me thru my 2 children and surgeries. I remember once he chased a skunk out the road by work so it wouldn't get hit and us telling him he couldn't come back in if he got sprayed. He loved his wife and children so much and I loved listening to stories. May God be with his family, prayers.
Love,
Beth

I was saddened to read of the passing of Brother Sherk, and my thoughts & prayers are with his family, friends, and chapter brothers at Ohio Epsilon. While I never had the honor of meeting Bill, I pledge that the SigEp Patriots Project will never forget his life and military service.

I was introduced to Dr. Bill Sherk in 1970 by my dearest friend, Mary Propolski. Thank God she did because Dr. Bill Sherk was the most compassionate and kind doctor that I ever had and I really needed it at that time. He delivered both of my children and my family cared for him deeply. When he retired I Never went to another doctor of that genre. (Probably not a good point to make but I couldn't imagine anyone as good in his field as he was). I also knew his feisty character of dad, Edgar, who was a fierce competitor in pinochle. God Bless you, Dr. Bill Sherk. I will never forget you.
