Anne Sargent Obituary

Anne MacGaffin Sargent

On January 29th, 2015, beloved wife and mother, Anne MacGaffin Sargent, passed away peacefully and with the same grace and dignity she was known for in life. Mrs. Sargent is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Christopher Smith Sargent, her son, Christopher Smith Sargent III, and her daughter, Thayer Anne Sargent. She also leaves daughter-in-law, Lauren Speth Sargent, granddaughter, Noelle Elise Sargent, and future son-in-law, Brian Douglas McGregor, to cherish her memory.

Born in 1944 in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Mrs. Sargent spent most of her childhood in Wilmington, Delaware with brothers John and Peter MacGaffin. She graduated from The Tatnall School in Wilmington and Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey before coming to Washington, D.C. to work for the Hon. Senator William Roth, Jr. of Delaware. Shortly thereafter, she met and married longtime Washingtonian, Christopher Smith Sargent, in 1969. Together they raised a loving family in Chevy Chase, Maryland and Spring Valley, NW. As part of the Washington community for nearly 50 years, Mrs. Sargent was heavily involved in a variety of social and charitable activities, including The Founders, Washington Committee for Historic Mount Vernon. Her strength of character and extraordinary sense of humor will be cherished by family and friends forever. Mrs. Sargent and her family were especially blessed to have spent the days preceding her passing showering her with love and fond recollections of a vigorous and happy life.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate her life on Friday, February 6th, 2015 at 10:00am at the Washington National Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in memory of Anne M. Sargent (Memo line) to Melanoma Research Fund, C/O Dr. Michael B. Atkins, 3970 Reservoir Road, NW, Suite E501, Washington, D.C. 20057.

It is hard to believe that such a beautiful, vibrant, and fun-loving friend is gone forever. From the time our boys were two we enjoyed all of their escapades and activities, and then we had girls who were close as well. Sargent family - you were and are the best, and my heart goes out to all of you.
