C. Johnson Obituary

C. Webster

Johnson, Jr.

"Wes"

On September 11, 2012, we lost a great human being when Wes Johnson, age 72, passed away suddenly at Cokesbury Village, surrounded by family and close friends. He was loved not only by his family and close friends, but also by the residents of the Cokesbury community, who had come to enjoy very much his sparkling presence during the three short years he had graced the Village. More than anything, it was his humor, caring for others, optimism, and his energy that endeared him to all.

He was a certified Master Gardener and a birder-par excellence. Speaking of his energy, he would often be observed zooming around the Cokesbury grounds in his mechanized wheelchair, flag flying, tending to flowers, plants and shrubbery, as well as expertly observing whatever birds flew by or perched near. He never lost his wit or his delightfully pleasant, sardonic demeanor. He maintained his sunny disposition even though he had been "dealt a bad hand" health-wise with a debilitating and rare neurological disorder, which he contracted sixteen years ago and which had rendered him unable to walk or to use his hands effectively. And, finally, he was struck with lung cancer this year, which he had fought valiantly to the end.

Wes was born and grew up in Wilmington, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. C. Webster Johnson, Sr. He attended Wilmington Friends School and Hobart College, worked in New Castle County and Delaware State government positions, and had been active in Republican politics.

He is survived by his loving family, including his sister, Suzy, and her husband, Norm Veasey, of Wilmington; a step-daughter, Cammie Parlatore of Southwest Harbor, ME (and her daughter and son); a stepson, Mac Phalan, of Wilmington; three nephews (Andy, Doug, and Kip Veasey); a niece (Molly Veasey Curran); nine great nephews and two great nieces.

A celebration of Wes's extraordinary life will be held at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of C. Webster Johnson, Jr., may be made to Cokesbury Village, to be dedicated to garden enhancement, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.

Wes was a friend forever these past 44 years. The memories will always remain vivid of someone who was open, honest, fun and non judgmental . I appreciated his character and his humanity and I'm so happy we got together last year.

Met Wes in Master Gardener class in '07. He was such a joy to be around and an amazing inspiration. All the other Master Gardeners and I will miss him.

It seems as if it were only yesterday when Wes and David and John and Peter and I (My name was "Danny Stat" then) and so many others would congregate at Wes's apartment across from Goldy-Beacom college in Wilm. for times of youthful fellowship and good cheer. I am truly saddened to hear of Wes's passing and the hardships of his illness. God Speed, old friend; no doubt you've added another twinkle in the eyes of the Creator and all of us here who knew you have been enriched as well.

'Wes' was a bright light in many of our lives here at Cokesbury. He found love and gave love. I did let him know frequently what a contribution he was making to so many. He was our Cokesbury ambassador and his light will always shine on and be remembered.
