Mrs. Catherine B. Wittekind, age 85, passed away peacefully at the Jeanne Jugan Residence in Newark, DE on Wednesday morning, February 9, 2011 surrounded by her children. Born on July 22, 1925 in Manhattan, NY, Catherine was the daughter of Joseph and Helen Burke.

She is survived by her daughter, Antoinette Vasko and six sons, Peter, Paul, Patrick, Stephen, Andrew, James and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene C. Wittekind, her sister, Dorothy, and brother, Walter. She worked at Heminway & Bartlett Mfg Co. and Tiffany and Co. in NYC. She was also a dorm mother at Culver Girl's Academy, Culver, IN. She lived in NYC until her marriage in 1955 and, several states including New York, South Carolina, Indiana, Massachusetts, Alabama, Connecticut and New Hampshire, as well as Germany and Australia.

Mrs. Wittekind was full of life and delighted in spending time with her children and grandchildren. Above all, she enjoyed making friends. Catherine was blessed to spend her last seven years as a resident of Little Sisters in Newark, DE, where she will be sadly missed. Her entire extended family wishes to extend their profound gratitude to the Little Sisters themselves, their staff and residents. They provided Catherine the utmost measure of care, dignity, and love.

A visitation will be held at Little Sisters of the Poor on Friday, February 11 from 3-6 pm at 185 Salem Church Rd., Newark, DE. A second visitation will be held 9-11 am on Saturday, February 12, followed by 11 am Mass. Catherine will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her late husband.
