Dr. Claude R. Foster

Age 84, was surrounded by his loving family at the Neighborhood Hospice (West Chester), when he was called home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Friday, September 14, 2012. He had courageously battled T-cell Lymphoma for the past 2 years. He was married to Lois Burns Foster for 60 years.

Dr. Foster was born on August 26, 1928 in Wilmington, Delaware. As an outstanding athlete, he was granted a football scholarship at the University of Tennessee/Chattanooga. However, he chose the path of academics. He was a Fulbright Grantee at the University of Freiburg, and also studied at Basel University and at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. He earned his BA degree from Eastern University, his Masters from the University of Delaware, a BD from the Reformed Episcopal Seminary, a Masters from the Crozer Theological Seminary, his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and was ordained as a Baptist Minister. Dr. Foster retired as Professor Emeritus in 2008 from West Chester University after 44 years of teaching history, prior to which he taught German at Tatnall High School for 10 years.

He is a published author with several books in print, including The Biography of Paul Schneider, "A protestant minister who died in a concentration camp" and Mary's Night, "a detailed account of the life of St. Maksymilian Kolbe" which has now been translated into 4 languages, as well as a book of several of his poems. For many years, he traveled extensively throughout Europe with college students in tow, quite often traveling behind the Iron Curtain during Communist regime. His knowledge of the Holy Bible, and other religions from around the world was unsurpassed, and he was quite often asked to give a lecture series regarding various viewpoints on both modern and historical Christianity, from churches throughout the tri-state region. For the past 20 years, he has taught adult Christian Education classes at the Limestone Presbyterian, Kennett Presbyterian, and Westminster Presbyterian churches. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kennett Square, PA.

He is survived by his son, Stephen and his wife Lori of Newark, DE; his daughter, Charissa of Downingtown, PA and his five grandchildren, Tyler and Kelsey (Middletown, DE), Alexander (Downingtown, PA), Dylan and Luke (Newark, DE).

You are invited to visit with Claude's family from 9-11 am Thursday September 20, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church 10 West Pleasant Grove Road West Chester, PA 19382. A funeral service will follow at 11 am. Interment will be held privately.
