Dr. Foster was born on August 26, 1928 in Wilmington, Delaware. As an outstanding athlete, he was granted a football scholarship at the University of Tennessee/Chattanooga. However, he chose the path of academics. He was a Fulbright Grantee at the University of Freiburg, and also studied at Basel University and at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. For many years, he traveled extensively throughout Europe with college students in tow, quite often traveling behind the Iron Curtain during Communist regime. His knowledge of the Holy Bible, and other religions from around the world was unsurpassed, and he was quite often asked to give a lecture series regarding various viewpoints on both modern and historical Christianity, from churches throughout the tri-state region. For the past 20 years, he has taught adult Christian Education classes at the Limestone Presbyterian, Kennett Presbyterian, and Westminster Presbyterian churches. To the Foster family:

I just recently learned of Dr. foster's passing. He was one of the most inspirational professors I studied with while an undergraduate at WCSC. My heartfelt condolences.

I will always remember his words to us at the end of our senior seminar in the Spring of 1975. "You are now prepared to go on" to further your studies. After carrying those words with me for these many years, I finally did go on to commence graduate study at the age of 58. I know he is looking down with pride and his spirit is with me in my endeavor.

DR. Foster was a challenging professor, but one who taught that hard work pays off. I was ready to quit my M.A in History program when I took his class, but he motivated me to achieve, and I finished his class with the most effort I ever put in a college class. And i reaped the reward of having a stronger work ethic, and I owe that to Dr. Foster. May he rest in peace. He was a good man!

Probably the best educator I had in my lifetime. I went on to law school in Texas and I have never forgotten his sense of discipline in history class.A truly wonderful man.

Dear Lois and Charissa,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss of husband and father. I enjoyed getting to know Claude at First Baptist Church and also through my stepdaughter Cammy who had him in a history class at WCU. I was always thrilled to receive a postcard from his mission trips to Poland and other places. I am sorry again for your loss, but rejoicing with you that he is now living in the presence of the Lord.

Steve, Clarissa and Mrs. Foster,
I was one of those college students who your father/husband accompanied to East Germany, and it remains to this day the most interesting and educational experience of my life. Your father was a mentor, and a man who lived his enthusiasm for his faith, his work, and especially his friends. May he rest in peace and blessings to you all. Tom Buglio

Claude was a great friend of our Sisters here at Marytown. Inevitably he would send me a copy of his latest poem and has done this for several years. We prayed for Claude's healing for the last years and now we pray for the repose of his soul. St. Maximilian will be embracing him in heaven.

A West Chester University friend informed me of the passing of Dr. Foster yesterday. I was a student in Dr. Foster's Renaissance and Reformation history class and can attest that this course was my most rigorous as an undergraduate. I fondly remember my experience traveling with Dr. Foster in July 1971 when he escorted a few of his students to the former East Germany to participate in a three week orientation to German culture, where we resided with students from all over Europe in a dorm in Halle-Neustadt. It was an unforgetable experience. He was a true scholar. Perhaps in a more excellent place now, Dr Forster is discussing with Martin Luther his ninety-five theses. I give my respect and condolence to the Foster family and I'm sure he will never be forgoton by his former students.

Sorry to read of the passing of Dr. Foster. As the manager of the printing department of WCU I spent many hours with Claude as we published four of his books. Good friend, I will miss him.

Dr. Foster was my most demanding undergraduate teacher and one of my greatest inspirations thoughout my life. His love for learning was unsurpassed and his enthusiasm for teaching set a standard that few could match. From the time I met Dr. Foster in 1968 when I was a freshman at West Chester University until his retirement we kept in touch. The memory of his classes remain with me now. No doubt, he is giving a lecture on church history in heaven now, and I know the large audience will give him its undivided attention. RIP, friend and mentor.
