I worked with Dave at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Office of General Counsel. He was a very talented attorney who could often see aspects of legal issues others missed. We also played on the office softball team, where Dave also displayed a lot of talent and heart. He was considerate, thoughtful, and ever so conscientious. May his memory be a comfort to all mourning his loss.

Professor Markell was a kind and selfless man who was simultaneously a great teacher. He made administrative procedures interesting- no easy task. He always had a smile and a kind word, was willing to help with Moot Court panels, and really took an interest in others. He will be missed, but appreciated for having been a part of my life.

My deepest sympathies, Jack and family. I am so sorry for the loss of such a kind and giving soul. I had not seen David for many years but followed his work, and often remembered him as one of the first people to befriend me when I moved to Delaware as a pre-teen. His leadership and kindness was evident in high school and clearly throughout his life. The world has, indeed, lost another angel. My condolences.

In our high school days, Dave was respected as a top student, class leader, all-around athlete and a genuinely nice and caring person. It is not surprising that he went on to excel academically and in his career, to become active in his faith community and to become a devoted husband and father. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, determination and sense of humor. He maintained ties with Delaware friends through the years and always expressed interest in their lives and families. I am extending heartfelt sympathy to the entire Markell family at this time of great loss, wishing them peace and comfort in the days ahead.

I worked with David at NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. He was an intelligent and unassuming colleague who was kind and generous with his time and praise. I remember he loved children and appeared to take great delight talking and playing with my kids when he came over for dinner. I am sure he was a great father to his three daughters. My heart goes out to Mona and his children.
He is mourned by all who knew him

Deepest condolences to Professor Markell's family and friends. I took several classes of his in law school, and he impressed me with his passion and love for teaching. He also served as the faculty advisor for the Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law, and his gentle and kind manner was welcome in an otherwise tense and deadline-driven environment. May you find peace and comfort in the memories you have of his joyful life.

Dave was one of the very best people I have ever known, with so many good qualities. A scholar, athlete, caring and kind to everyone, and a fierce but joyful competitor. Truly a great friend. I feel blessed that I was able to hang with Dave during high school in Newark, DE and at UVA law school. Nancy and I enjoyed a summer with Dave in DC, some epic travel, and lots of laughs. Dave will be missed by us and by many, but he will always be here in our hearts and in our memories.

Small world. I haven't heard David Markell's name since...David and I went to Junior High School together in Newark.
And here---we were both in Tallahassee, too. He certainly lived his whole life!

Dear Mona
I am heartbroken to hear of Dave's passing. He always spoke about you and girls with such love and pride. As much as I loved hearing of his research (and was always amazed at how disciplined he was in writing papers after a full day of work and family diner), my fondest memories of Dave include playing pitch-and-catch at lunch breaks on a lawn in Montreal not far from the CEC. Our deepest sympathies, the world is smaller place with him Scott and Christiane

My condolences to Dave’s family and friends. Dave had a remarkable life and touched many people. I played American Legion baseball with Dave and he was a great teammate. My Dad was his high school baseball coach and they had two Delaware State Championships together. I haven’t talked to Dave for many years, it meant a lot to me when Dave sent a note last year after my Dad passed telling me how much he appreciated playing on those teams. Thank you Dave, you lived life well.

Mona, Rebecca, Jenny and Rachel,
I am so sorry for your loss. I had the honor of working with and learning from Dave at Albany Law School. He really launched the Environmental Law Program picking up where Bernie Harvith left off. He started the Environmental Outlook Journal, focused on the Public Trust Doctrine, clean water and so many other issues. He was truly loved by his students and his colleagues. The Environmental Law Society took off under his leadership. We were all sad when Dave left Albany for the warmer Florida climate. He left our planet better than he found it, and he has instilled a passion and ethic for the environmental in thousands of students and people who knew him. He made a difference. May you find comfort in the wonderful happy memories you made together, and may his memory be a blessing.

Jack and Carla,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your brother sounds like a remarkable man who will be so dearly missed. I am thinking of your mother as well. Her pain must be very deep, like yours. He fought a difficult battle, but he didn't lose. He inspired all who knew him. What more could you want?
Best wishes always,

David was a good friend during high school, college and law school. We then touched base occasionally through social media. He was a good man. I never had the pleasure or privilege of meeting his wife and daughters, but am sure they are devastated by his loss. All of his high school friends are mourning the loss of the smart, funny, caring person he was. Prayers for the family of an irreplaceable person, who will be missed by so many.
