Age 85, of Wilmington, passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She succumbed to her second bout of breast cancer after a six month struggle. She was the loving wife of Maurice Candy, with whom she shared 35 years of marriage.
Born in Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna Marie Ballinger Sr. Raised in Rhode Island, Doris was a resident of Wilmington most of her life. She started her nursing career as a Nurse Cadet during World War II and worked as an R.N. doing hospital nursing before finishing her career in the mental health field. Doris was a loving, devoted mother who took immense pride in raising two families and then watching them raise their families.
Doris became an avid racing fan and sidecar partner following her husband Maurice's motorcycle career and hobby. She enjoyed traveling with him on their treks to England, Australia, New Zealand and the annual Daytona Motorcycle Races. She was an avid bowler most of her life and enjoyed playing Wii bowling in her later years with her teammates at the senior center. She was also a master quilter, a passion she shared with her daughter Nancy and there wasn't hardly a day she didn't finish a Sudoku puzzle.
In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by her older sister, Evelyn Caswell, and her children Norman A. Gabel in Albuquerque, NM., J. Stephen Gabel and his wife, Deborah Garry in Lee, MA., Nancy E. Collins and her husband, Edward in Wilmington, DE., Jennifer Candy Chlumsky in Baltimore, MD., and Christopher Candy and his wife, Gina in West Chester, PA.; her grandchildren: Nicholas M. Gabel, Gregory R. Spiess, Andrew D. Spiess, J. Bradley Spiess, Adrienne L. Chlumsky, Kate N. Chlumsky, Mathew C. Candy, Mitchell C. Candy, Shannon M. Thompson and Nicholas E. Collins; her great grandkids Andrew D. Spiess, Sienna N. Spiess, and Olivia D. Lee. She was predeceased by her brothers, William E. Ballinger Jr. and Robert A. Ballinger.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE from 5-7 pm and again on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 9 am. Her funeral service will follow at 10 am. Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
