Passed away on March 28, 2009 in Birmingham, AL. The cause of death was cardiac complications of chronic pulmonary disease.
Edward was born on April 23, 1961. A native of Wilmington, Ted was a 1979 graduate of Wilmington Friends School and a 1983 graduate of Fordham University in New York City with a degree in theater. Ted worked in theater and television in New York and subsequently in Los Angeles before settling in Birmingham in the mid-1990's. His two greatest mentors were Violet Richman, a music teacher at Friends, and the actress Dixie Carter. In Birmingham, he continued to be active in community theater companies in both acting and directing roles. His major performances included Mack the Knife in "Three Penny Opera" and McMurphy in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." He brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmington physicians Dr. M. Margaret S. and Dr Frank T. O'Brien. He is survived by his 5 siblings: F. Thomas, Jr. (Frederick, MD); John S., II and his wife Patrice (Lincoln University, PA); M. Margaret (Mobile, AL); James J. (Washington, DC); Matthew M. and his wife Angela(Wilmington, DE); his 3 nephews, Taidghin, Conor and Logan; his niece, Leah; 1 maternal aunt, Julia Davis (Wilmington, DE); 1 maternal uncle, Frank Smith (Wilmington, DE), his beloved nanny, Caroline Pearce (Wilmington, DE); and many cousins in the Smith and O'Brien families.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 11 am, at the Wilmington Friends School Lower school campus.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a charitable donation to the Wilmington Friends School Performing Arts Department.
