Age 87 of Kennett Square, PA died on Sunday, December 18, 2005, at Chester County Hospital, in West Chester. He was the husband of Joanna Ballou Savery, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage.
Born in West Chester, he was the son of the late Edward W Savery, Sr. and Mary Williams Savery. He graduated from Westtown School, attended Drexel University, received a degree in education and a master's degree in science education from University of Pennsylvania. During WWII, Mr. Savery, a conscientious objector, spent 3 years in civilian public service. In 1947, Mr. Savery began his teaching career at Wilmington Friends School in DE, where he taught for 37 years. During his years there, he taught biology, chemistry and physics, was head of the science department and head of the upper school. He especially enjoyed working with students as the college guidance counselor. Mr. Savery was a lifelong Quaker and an active member of Middletown Friends Meeting in Lima, PA for over 50 years. He enjoyed exploring unusual places and was an ardent gardener.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 children, Joseph W Savery, and his wife, Deborah, of Downingtown, PA, Carol Savery-Frederick and her husband, William P. Frederick, of Windsor Locks, CT, and Sylvia W. Savery of West Chester, PA; 3 grandchildren, Sarah Savery, and her husband, Aaron Teter, Victoria, and her husband, Mathew Williams, and Paul Savery, and his wife, Natasha; and 5 great grandchildren, Max, Nico, April, Jillian and Jenna.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at Middletown Friends Meeting in Lima, PA. Interment will be private.
Memorial gifts may be made to Wilmington Friends School, Savery Science Fund, 101 School Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.
