Edward Wierzbicki Obituary

Edward Francis

Wierzbicki

Age 91, died peacefully January 20, 2011, at the Heartland Hospice House in Pike Creek, surrounded by his loving family.

Ed was born in Philadelphia on April 10, 1919, to Vincent and Clara (Lewandowski) Wierzbicki but lived most of his life in New Castle, DE. After working with his father in the fishing business on the Delaware River, then at Congoleum-Nairn and Diamond Ice & Coal Co., he worked at the Delaware Memorial Bridge from its inception in 1951. He retired as maintenance supervisor in 1980.

He served his country during WWII in the Army National Guard and the Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945.

Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing and crabbing, bowling, playing cards and the Lottery. He loved gardening and working in his woodshop. He was always on the go, ever ready to help people in need: not only family & friends, but also casual acquaintances, knew his goodwill. He loved music, especially polka and country, and played the harmonica.

In 1940, he married Linda Regina Fusco - together they would have eleven children. In 2007, after 66 years of marriage, his beloved wife Linda passed away after a brief illness. He is also predeceased by his brothers Henry (Rose survives) and Joseph, and by his sisters Mary (Trala), Helen (Lawler), and Agnes (Witt). His brother Walter survives. He was also predeceased by his son Franny (Mary survives). He is survived by his other children: Edward (Elisabeth), John, Linda R Talley, Vincent, Henry (Elaine), Dennis (Eileen), Stanley (Rebecca), Claire Mattei (Gary), Michael, and Anna Ruether (James). In addition, he is survived by 25 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grand-daughter and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the many compassionate and professional staff who helped Ed in the recent past - at the Franciscan Care Center at Brackenville, Christiana Hospital and the physicians from Christiana Medical Group, and the Heartland Hospice House.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 521 Harmony St. in New Castle, on Wednesday, January 26 at 10:30 am. Entombment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the CHARLES P. ARCARO FUNERAL HOME, 2309 Lancaster Ave., Wilmington, on Tuesday evening, January 25, from 6-8 pm. No visitation will be held on Wednesday morning prior to mass.
