Frederick Funk Obituary

Frederick K. Funk, Esq. (hereinafter referred to as "Dad"), age 61, passed away peacefully in his sleep from complications of diabetes and heart disease on Monday, April 8, 2013.

Dad was an avid fan of all local sports--specifically, but not limited to, the Phillies, the Eagles, the Flyers, and everything University of Delaware. Dad is survived by his three sons--Brian, Kevin, and David--along with his two cats, Donovan and Sir Charles. Dad is also survived by his two brothers, William Funk and Vance Funk, and his sister, Antonia Budd.

Dad was a respected real-estate lawyer whose clients were considered his friends and whose colleagues were treated as family. Dad had the ability to touch everyone he encountered with his warm personality and friendly demeanor. Dad was generous, kind, and caring to everyone in his life.

Dad loved and cared for everyone around him. He would not want this to be a sad time, but a celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Faithful Friends (12 Germay Drive Wilmington, DE 19804) as Dad cared tremendously for animals throughout his life.

A memorial service will be held at 5 pm on Friday, April 12, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 3 pm. Interment will be held privately at All Saints Cemetery in Wilmington.

I met Fred in 1985 in a prospective house deal that never gelled, but he was still my first choice as real estate attorney when I bought my present home in 2000 because in my experience he was the nicest guy who tacked "Esq." after his name.
A great loss of one of the most genuinely friendly people I've met in life.

In the 40+ years that I knew Fred I have yet to come across anyone who could make you smile with his warm sincere greeting when you saw him like he could. His big smile and big handshake were one of a kind. He had a great way of making you feel terrific just being around him. We shared a lot of great days together.

I know that you will sorely miss your father and brother as I will, but take comfort in the fact that many, many people will smile just thinking about him when they remember him fondly in the years to come. I know I will.

April 11, 2013

Dear Funk Family, please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your Dad. We had the pleasure of meeting your Dad over 20 years ago at our home closing. Over the years, he assisted us with our wills etc. He was an excellent lawyer that was willing to help you in any way he could. We always looked forward to our "visits" to take care of any new business. He had a way about him that would light up a room and make you feel so relaxed. He will be missed be so many.

Dear Brian, Kevin and David,
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of your dad. I met your dad at the University of Delaware and I was even a bridesmaid in your parent's wedding. Throughout the last 30 years, your dad was the go to guy for all my legal affairs and every time we met, it was if no time had passed and we were still having a blast at U. of D. We always had a great time taking a walk down memory lane. I pray that all the wonderful memories you have, will support you during this journey.

Brian, David and Kevin. I was shocked to here of the passing of your dad. My mother had called his office yesterday to have your dad do some work for her and her deed. I got to know your dad in 1969-70 when I was a sophomore on the basketball team and your dad was a senior captain who had one great jump shot. I also had him as my attorney on my home and enjoyed bumping into him at Dewey Beach in the summer. I will always remember his smile, his laugh and his love of life and his work. It was also a well respected person in the community.

It was disappointing to read about Freds passing today. I had done work from time to time with Fred over the years, and he was a rarity, he was a lawyer that everyone liked. I am sure he will be greatly missed.

April 10, 2013

Brian, Kevin and David,

I am a local Realtor who has done numerous transactions with your father. He was a wonderful man and always made me laugh and smile. At the settlement table, he was never short of stories. I remember one in particular, where he was talking about a cruise that you had just gone on and the bar tab... if I am not mistaken, it was $3500.00!!! Your Dad, laughed and laughed, he just couldn't get over it!

Anyway, he was a great guy and I always enjoyed working with him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.

In deepest sympathy,

I remember the night I met Fred Funk at the University of Delaware. He was standing in the doorway of my room at Sharp Hall and just laughing and laughing at the antics going on that evening. It really was a moment of pure joy for me as that evening I met a fine man who was the genuine item and a pure joy to know.

Fred and I traveled many paths together since that first evening and I was privileged to work with him and actually represent him on some matters during the course of our personal and professional lives. We played golf together, drank beer together, laughed but never cried together, and often took a moment to discuss the meaning of life and how you had to find the joy in each day that God gave you.

I understand why the words here ask the reader not to feel sorrow for my friend's passing. He lived life well and had the God given gift of giving his happiness to others.

I will miss Funky Fred all the rest of my days but will carry his smile, his laughter, and the pure goodness of his being in my heart forever.

God bless you Freddy. You lived your life well and are loved by so many. My condolences to your sons and your family.

Freddie, as I often called him, will be missed my many of his dear friends and family. To many he was a person who endeared you as a freind and would try to help you any way possible, expecting nothing in return. His smiling face was ever present even when he didn't feel great. If you loved sports, Freddie was your man! Freddie, you will be missed. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family.
