George Cattermole Obituary

George Reid Cattermole

AGE: 75 • Wilmington, Delaware

George Cattermole, age 75, of Wilmington DE passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Christiana Care of cardiovascular complications. His family was by his side.

George was born and raised in Denver, Colorado graduating from Regis Jesuit High School. He attended The University of Santa Clara for one year; and returned to Colorado to graduate from The University of Colorado with a degree in Psychology.

Upon graduation, George enlisted in The U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and served in the Aleutian Islands. In 1966 George joined DuPont as a salesman in The Explosives Dept., covering the southwest. He always said that was his favorite job. He was then transferred to manufacturing at The Potomac River Plant where he authored "The Blasters Handbook" which is still used today.

In 1977 The Cattermole family moved to Sydney Australia where George was promoted to President of DuPont Australia. Some of his fondest stories were about his adventures with the tough miners of Australia and New Guinea. In 1980 The Cattermoles moved to Wilmington, DE, where he was named Director of International Operations of The Freon Division and Director of Worldwide Marketing for Freon Products. George later ran DuPont's Inter-Department Marketing Committee and followed by leadership of DuPont's Corporate Marketing Program.

After retiring from DuPont in 1999, George joined the board of Outlast Technologies Inc., a Boulder, Colorado Technology company. He was named Chairman of the Board and shortly thereafter became President and CEO. In 2008 George was appointed Chairman of the board of Charles & Colvard Ltd., a publicly traded company based in Raleigh NC. George served a two-year term as President and CEO and led a successful corporate restructuring. George officially retired last year.

George was a talented athlete. In 2002 he was inducted into the Regis High School Hall of fame - Honorable Mention Best Athlete All-Time.

During his first year in college at Santa Clara University, George played two sports. In football, George was a cornerback and punt returner and he was a pitcher on the baseball team. George's most memorable game was his 4-1 victory over Stanford as a freshman. After transferring to The University of Colorado on the baseball team he was affectionately known as "Cannonball Cattermole". He was inducted into "The Living Legends" for the University of Colorado Buffaloes. George declined an opportunity to play professional baseball in order to pursue a career in business.

George is survived by his wife Lisa Olinger Cattermole, children Drake Cattermole and Ashley Cattermole Gillerlain; grandchildren Madison Elizabeth Gillerlain, Drake Zachary and Katrina Elizabeth Cattermole; son-in-law Paul Gillerlain; brother Paul S. Cattermole; sister Jean Cattermole Mihura; and many nieces and nephews.

George loved his family, golf, skiing, fly-fishing, margheritas and blue jeans. He loved to laugh, especially at his own jokes. And what a laugh! George's laugh was so infectious he could brighten a very large room. George loved people and could chat them up in a pub in Ireland or a mine in West Virginia. And they loved him back. George leaves so many friends who already miss that mischievous smile and incredible sense of humor.

In addition to his corporate boards George served community service organizations, including Red Clay Consolidated School, Wilmington Friends School, Trustee of the Marketing Science Institute, and Conference Board Marketing Group. He was a member of Wilmington Country Club and The Snowmass Club. George was also a member of the Arnold Bog Fish and Game Preserve in Canada.

There will be a private Memorial Service for immediate family. A celebration of George's life for family and friends will be held at the Wilmington Country Club on Tuesday, October 18th at 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Red Clay Education Foundation PO Box 1281 Hockessin, DE 19707.

I knew George from Blessed Sacrament grade school and Regis High School. He was a tremendous athelete with a very competetive drive. He was the guiding force as the quarterback of a very good high school football team. I was a skinny right guard and once he said he came up behind center and looked to his right at my two skinny legs and shuddered. We were good friends during those years especially during the spring and summer of 1965 while he was waiting to get on to DuPont and I was waiting to begin law school. We both had a lot of free time and hung out together drinking his Mom's beer. I haven't seen George in over 40 years but always admired him and was always glad he was on my side. My condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of working for George during his tenure at Outlast. He had the unique ability to sit through a three hour meeting and synthesize down to one statement like "the titanic is sinking and we're rearranging the deck chairs " or "you've gotta shoot ahead of the duck"! Our friendship continued after his retirement during periodic meetings at Buckleys and gymnastics meets where he'd cheer on his granddaughter Madison. George will be missed by Mara, Emma, Sydney and me. Our deepest sympathies go out to Lisa, Drake , Ashley and all their family and friends.

On behalf of the Red Clay Education Foundation Board of Directors, we want George's family to know how much he was loved, respected, and appreciated by all of us. George was a founding member of the RCEF board and over the last ten plus years, he contributed immensely to its growth and successes. He always provided sound insight to the issues at hand, and as our board Treasurer, he insured that our investment portfolio was always managed and invested wisely. His good nature and positive outlook inspired us and made all of us better individuals. He will be truly missed and we will be keeping George and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

As a high school competitor of George, I send condolences to his friends and family (I played for Cathedral HS in Denver and he was at our rival Regis HS). One could tell he was unusual and outstanding from the get-go and he stayed that way throughout his life. Now at age 75, and after 49 years of law I still value getting a hit off George/Cannonball as one of my major accomplishments in life. His was an accomplished life. Rest in Peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. So very sorry for your loss. I worked in the Explosives Department when George was a salesman. When i think of him, I remember his smile, laughter and dedication to his job. He was a gentleman and always a pleasure to work with. He will be missed.

George, (Regis) and I, (Holy Family), played on the High School Parochial all-star baseball team two years in a row 1957 and 1958. In those days, it was the Parochs against the Pubs. However, Holy Family and Regis still had a huge dislike for each other, but somehow George overcame that negativity. Everyone wanted to be his friend. I got to know George through that experience. I remember him fondly as a good guy. However briefly, I am happy to have known him.
My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends. I will say a prayer for him.

So sorry, Drake and the rest of the Cattermole Family, to read about George's passing. He was a great guy, and I enjoyed the occasion to work with him briefly about 1990 or so when our careers overlapped. George, Jamie Murray and I worked together to develop the ideas around and negotiate the creation of the Tour DuPont International Cycling Road Race, after its predecessor -- the Tour de Trump, on which I'd worked for the DuPont Co External Affairs -- had folded. George was a thoughtful and patient guy, and a delight to work with.

Having known George since grade school and being a neighbor, I can say he was one of the Good Guys and perhaps the best natural athlete I have ever known. He always had his little warm inviting smile. Condolences to his family and host of many fiends, Tom Wegs.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cattermole as part of my job at duPont. He was one of the outstanding executives I met while working in the compensation and benefits division. He was very kind and understanding of our work, and always the true professional. I knew the first time that I met Mr. Cattermole he was a very special person, bound for great achievements. "ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS".
