Schaeffer, Jr.
Of Landenburg, PA, passed away on August 12, 2007, at Heartland Hospice House.
Mr. Schaeffer was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Dorothy and Howard F. Schaeffer, Sr. He attended PS DuPont Hight School where he excelled in many sports. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1953 where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and played on their first undefeated football team. A sports enthusiast all his life, Mr. Schaeffer was on the Delaware Senior Volley Ball Olympic Team. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating and crabbing at hs summer home in Chestertown, MD. Mr. Schaeffer served in the U.S. Marine Corp and was employed by the DuPont Company for 30 years at Chambers Works, then their Newport Plant. He retired in 1990 from the Newport Ciba-Geigy Plant. He had been an active and devoted member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and served as the President of their Church Counsel for many years. He later joined the Zion Lutheran Church in Wilmington.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Jane (Toby) in 1993; his parents; and his sister, Shirley Fisher. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Mullin (Mel); his son, Howard and his wife, Dena of Columbus, GA; his son, Steven and his wife, Molly of Duxbury, MA. He is also survived by 2 step-children, Paul S. Mullin and Merry Piper of Kennett Square, PA; 7 grandchildren; and 4 nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 am, at Zion Lutheran Church, 2101 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park. Friends may call at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin on Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to Zion Lutheran Church Food Pantry, 2101 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19801; or Marine Corps Toys for Tots.
