Spillan, Sr. (Ret.)
Age 65, of north Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully, at home on Tuesday, May 23, 2006.
Mr. Spillan was a graduate of Archmere Academy and Wilmington College. He was a retired captain with the Delaware State Police and head of security with Verizon. He also had served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Spillan was well known for his service to his church and community. He was a head usher at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Claymont, where he could always be counted on to work at Bingo games and the annual Carnival. He was also the longtime president of his local civic association and a member of Claymont Fire Co. He enjoyed woodworking and volunteering at Immaculate Heart of Mary, where the children knew him as Pop-Pop.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Barbara (Hetherton) Spillan; sons, Delaware State Police Master Corporal, James R. Spillan, Jr. and his wife, Lucia, and Delaware State Police Master Corporal, Dennis M. Spillan and his wife, Helen; and 5 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, William L. Spillan; and 3 sisters, Elizabeth S. Becker, Catherine S. Wood and Denise S. Gallo.
A viewing will be held on Friday morning, May 26, 2006, from 10 am-l pm at Holy Rosary Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 pm. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
