Janet Abernathy Obituary

Janet Abernathy

Newark - Janet Laws Abernathy, age 84, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on July 18 surrounded by her loving family.

Janet was born to Norman and Ruth (Morrison) Laws on January 10, 1934 and spent her early years on the family farms in Bear and Glasgow.

She graduated from Newark High School and The Delaware Hospital School of Nursing, and then enjoyed a long career as a pediatric nurse at the Delaware Division (now Wilmington Hospital) and later at the Terry Children's Psychiatric Center. She married her sweetheart Bill in 1955 after meeting him at the Merryland Roller Rink in Glasgow one weekend when he was on leave from the Navy. They went on to have four children and celebrated 51 years of marriage before he passed away in 2006.

Janet loved spending time with her family and friends and was always on the go. She filled her retirement days with luncheons with her high school friends, bible study or helping at church, shopping for bargains to add to her many collections, researching her family ancestry, working in her yard with her flower gardens, playing the piano or enjoying her beach house. She loved sports and rarely missed a Phillies or Eagles game on tv. She was a kind-hearted, strong woman who taught all who knew her that any challenge is just a bump in the road and nothing that can't be overcome.

Janet was pre-deceased by her husband Bill, her son Steven, her brothers Norman (Jean) and Robert (Jane) Laws, her sister Annabelle (Charles) Weldin, sister-in-law Barbara Laws, and her son-in-law Dave Lawson.

She is survived by her daughter Pam Lawson (Dan Fromal) and sons Bill (Lisa) Abernathy and Mike (Cathy) Abernathy, all of Middletown, sister Shirley Amato (Victor) and brother Earl Laws, sisters-in-law Nancy Miller and Lina Abernathy along with many nieces and nephews. Also survived by grandchildren Scott Lawson, Kim Holtzman, Amy Chas, Jordan, Mike and Gary Abernathy and great-grandchildren Logan, Emma, Caraline, Olivia, Madison, William, Cooper, Delaney, Kallie, Taylor and Finley Jo.

Services will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Church, 3135 Summit Bridge Road, Bear, DE with visitation from 9:30am to 11am. Burial will follow in St. Georges Cemetery.

The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Delaware Hospice and Bayada Home Health Care for their excellent care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cornerstone Church, 3135 Summit Bridge Rd., Bear, DE 19701

Pam....I only had a brief time to talk with your Mom, but even though it was so brief, I did get to know how much she will be missed..... He sweet smile is what I will remember when I think about Her....Her work here on earth was done so God decided he had something else for her to do with Him....My prayers will be with you and your family....

Aunt Janet was always so kind to me. We lived far apart so didn't get to interact as much as I would have liked. I know this truth - we will reunite in Heaven and have an eternally grand time!

I'm guessing that although I know her daughter, Pam, that I must have known her and had contact with her during the years I worked at the Delaware Division where she was a pediatric nurse. The smallness of our world amazes me sometimes, but people tell me it is a Wilmington, Delaware, thing. My deepest sympathies to the family at your loss. One thing is absolutely sure...your family is 'good people'...one and all!

Please accept my dearest and heartfelt sympathy; I am so sorry for your loss. May the God who "binds up the brokenhearted" and "comforts all who mourn" sustain your family during this challenging time. Isaiah 61:1, 2
