Jean Dickson Obituary

Jean Stewart Price Dickson

June 20, 1924-May 5, 2017

Jean Stewart Price Dickson was born in 1924 in New York City. She grew up on the Upper West Side, where, as a true child of New York, she chased about with her friends through the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and ducked into the galleries of Broadway shows. During the war, she volunteered at the Columbia/Presbyterian Hospital, and afterwards attended the Katherine Gibbs School, the top-ranked training program for executive secretaries at the time, and worked as an executive secretary. She "Liked Ike,"and campaigned for Eisenhower in 1952. Jean met her husband, Fred Dickson, at a New Year's ski weekend in Stowe Vermont. Knowing they'd found the right person, they married six months later in 1953. Grateful to leave the "rat race" of the city, she moved with Fred to Ilion, New York, where their first son, Stewart, was born. Fred's career at the DuPont Company moved them around the country: South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Delaware, while Jean raised daughter Susan, and a second son, Andrew. She raised them with love, and cultivated in them a love for art and music, summer road trips, and swimming in cold mountain lakes.

Jean loved Gene Kelley, Jimmy Stewart, and Katharine Hepburn, Episcopalian hymns, cabin camping in the woods, golden retrievers, and James Herriot's stories of his veterinarian days. She loved her children and grandchildren and made them her life's work with great joy. She loved Fred's crooning, a rib roast with Yorkshire pudding, and all things English.

Jean is mourned by her oldest son Stewart, his wife Rebecca, and their three children, Price, Nate, and Maura. She had a very close and loving relationship with her devoted daughter, Susan, and took immense pride in Susan's accomplishments in horticulture and education. Her son Andrew, his wife Anna, and their two children Atticus and Liza Rose, will always remember Jean and her Florida adventures with love. The three children and their families will gather this summer for a memorial service at Jean's beloved Lake George, in upstate New York, where Jean will be laid to rest next to her gentle and loving husband, Frederick.
