Joan Boyle Obituary

On October 8, 2012, our mother and grandmother, Joan S. Boyle, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness.

Born in Wilmington, DE on March 29, 1935, Joan was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Starobynski. She attended Christ Our King School and was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School. Prior to marrying, she worked for DP&L, then in the early 70s, while raising her family, joined Wilmington Trust where she eventually retired after more than 35 years of service. A devout Catholic, she was extremely dedicated to her faith and family. She was a lifelong member of St. Catherine of Siena and St. John the Beloved parishes. She loved spoiling her grandson, Christmas holidays, visiting her favorite store, Continental Jewelers, watching The Young and the Restless, horror movies, and was a fabulous cook especially known for her pound cake. She was a warm and caring Mother, Aunt and friend.

Joan's loving husband of 55 years, John H. Boyle, passed away on December 25, 2011. She will be greatly missed by her three daughters: Valerie Baker and fiancé Joseph Rhoades, Veronica (Ronnie) Nicolson and husband Dave, MaryLee Frederick and husband Kyle, and the family cat Charlie. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Catherine Starobynski, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson; William "Gar" Baker Jr., brothers: William, Michael and Thomas Starobynski, sisters: Katherine Shurygailo, Ann Sitewicz, Julia Pankowski, and Irene Betts.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Compassionate Care Hospice, Home Helpers, and Drs. Timothy Wozniak and William Nottingham for their devoted care during our mother's illness. Special thanks also to the professionals who cared for Joan as well as for the friends who visited and provided meals during her illness. Your kindness and support are truly appreciated.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 12 at 10 am at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2503 Centerville Road, Wilmington. Entombment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, on Thursday, October 11 from 6 to 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations be made to St. Catherine of Siena, 2503 Centerville Road, Wilmington, DE 19808; or St. John the Beloved, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Aunt Joanne as I called her was always so sweet and kind to me. My Mom was her older sister, Julia, and you could always see the love and respect between the two of them. Both strong willed ladies who I looked up to and admired. Know that Aunt Joanne did a wonderful job as wife, Mother, and Grandmother. When I say she will be missed you all know what I am talking about. May you rest in peace with the Angels in Heaven just like you were on earth. Thank you for always great memories.

To Joan's family,
I was very saddened to read of Joan's passing. I worked the night shift with her at Wilmington Trust Company for 8 years. She was such a nice lady and always had a smile on her face. I often ran into her at Strawbridges when she was shopping and we would chat and get caught up on people and things. I know she will be greatly missed. My thoughts, prayers and sympathy go out to all of you at this sad time.
