Jonathan Whitcomb Obituary

Jonathan Peter Whitcomb

Wilmington, DE - On Saturday, August 10, 2019, Jonathan Peter Whitcomb, loving son, brother and father of two, passed away at age 57. Jonathan was born on May 21, 1962 in Wilmington, Delaware to Newell E. and Ellen Tellier Whitcomb.

Jon graduated from West Chester University with a degree in business. He enjoyed a 25-year career in the steel pipe industry. He had a love for Hawaii and his family members who lived there and he visited frequently. He was a longtime Rotarian and recently received the club's highest award for service.

Jon was a talented golfer from a young age with a lifelong love for the sport. He dedicated thousands of hours to volunteering with a passion for helping others. His family is grateful for the love Jon received from the many friends he made helping others through the years.

Jonathan is survived by his children, Diana R. Whitcomb and Amy S. Whitcomb, his mother, Ellen T. Whitcomb, his brothers, Timothy and James Whitcomb, his niece, Lynn Whitcomb and his nephew, Matthew Whitcomb, along with a large loving extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Newell E. Whitcomb and his brother, Newell E. (Chip) Whitcomb Jr.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 19, 2019 at 2pm at the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennan's Church Rd., Wilmington, DE. All who knew and loved Jon are welcome to join us. He will be greatly missed by us all. To send condolences, visit: www.dohertyfh.com 302 999 8277.

Thinking of Jonathan on the day,
one year later, of his journey to Heaven. Wishing the Whitcomb family peace in knowing that he is safe and with God.
I am sure that Jon is still spreading kindness and great smiles, and is loving having those angel wings to fly.

I grew up next to Jon and have many fond memories of him playing with me, my brother, and the kids in the neighborhood. He was so funny and made us laugh all the time.

I remember one summer when he was trying to sell tickets to jump his bike over our pond, just like our hero Evil Kinevil. At the last minute, the jump got called off as it was not exactly clear where his bike was supposed to land. (Either that or his parents found out!)

Either way, great summer memories were had by all. I guess that is why they are called the good 'ole days. I wish I was reliving these memories with Jon right now.

Jon was there for me and my family when my dad passed away, and that meant more than he could have known.

I'll miss Jon, his kindness and humor. Rest In Peace Jon, you made this world a much better place and will be remembered by your childhood friends forever.

Jonathan used to live across the street from my family and I. He used to tell me he loved seeing my boys outside playing. He was a nice man. Very sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear family of Jon, Sincere condolences on the death of your son, brother and father. I enjoyed working with Jon on different Rotary projects over the past few years. He was always such a pleasant helpful person to work with. I have just now realized that Jon's mother Ellen and my mother Jane Lyons were good friends when they both belonged to a Concord Country Club. I wish I could have shared this with Jon when we worked together on the Flag for Heroes project for Rotary since his father and both my parents served in WWII. With love, Kathy Lyons Fleming

My wife Sandi and I send our prayers to Jon's family "for the Peace that Passeth Understanding" on his untimely and early passing.

I knew Jon in passing for several years, as a Fellow Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Wilmington. He was a fine individual and I enjoyed his company when we happened to sit together at lunch, or be involved and engaged in a Rotary event. I'm sorry I didn't know him better outside of Rotary.

As a Chaplain of our Rotary Club, I know that many of us grieve Jon's passing. He was just honored a few weeks ago on 25 July with our Club's prestigious John Newnam Award for his distinguished volunteer service.

On behalf of so many of us in the Rotary Club, we mourn Jon's passing, we're grateful for the time that Jon had on this earth, and we send our deepest condolences to his children and family.
