Kay Aalvik Obituary

Kay Haegele Aalvik

Seattle - Kay Haegele Aalvik, 58, joined with the infinite on the morning of February 4, 2021 surrounded by her loving family in Seattle, Washington. The angels rejoiced and those of us left behind are grieving the loss of a wonderful human being. Kay showed all of us the meaning of grace as she traveled the murky waters of stage 4 cancer. Kay had an amazing life as the youngest of five rambunctious kids. Kay was accomplished at everything she attempted— a state champ swimmer, gymnast, musician, field hockey star, diver, skier, quilter, nurse, yoga teacher, peer counselor and acupuncturist. Undoubtedly, Kay's greatest gift was her ability to connect with people. She made everyone feel like they mattered.

Kay was born in Wilmington, DE to Charles and Caroline Haegele. She graduated from William Penn High School, Del Tech Community College and Wilmington University. Kay began her career at Christiana Care before becoming a traveling nurse, finally landing at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she retired in 2020 after 26 years of service.

Kay is survived by her loving husband, Ed Aalvik, daughters Tamryn (Teague) and Terra, grandson Howie Kay, sister Bev (William) Walsh, Judy/Anna Meyer, brother Steve Haegele, nephews Scott Meyer, Hunter and Michael Walsh, Chase and Carter Haegele, sister-in-law Holly Haegele and many aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins. Kay was predeceased by her parents and brother Chuck.

Donations may be made, in her honor, to Reevaluation Counseling, 719 2nd Ave., Seattle, WA. 98109

After cross country practice, we used to watch those field hockey games after school. Those games could get very spirited. Kay was, indeed, a champion with a strong enthusiasm for sport. We were all young, strong, and determined. I occasionally reflect on those days with fondness. God Bless the Haegele Aalvik families.

What a joy it was to be hosted by Kay and Anna for my visit to Seattle in 2015! I am so blessed to have had some conversation with Kay and to know what an amazing and interesting a person she had become. I remember visiting Chuck a few weeks after Kay was born, and at seven years of age we were just old enough to be fascinated by this tiny newborn human, and we stood in silence just watching her sleep. Fifty-eight years later I stand in awe of her many accomplishments, which are numerous. Even with all that, the thing that stands out most is the kindness, and that is a stunning legacy to have.

Bev, Steve, and Anna...I offer my deepest sympathies. I always wished I was part of your family when we were growing up and all of you...especially your parents...always made me feel like I kinda was. I am so grateful to have that as part of who I am, and it is from that spirit of kinship that I hope you will find peace despite such unspeakable loss. To you, Ed and the girls, I am so sorry.
