Louis V. Amalfitano passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 2, 2007 after a long battle with cancer.
Lou was born on July 8, 1945 in Ischia, Italy. He immigrated to America with his parents and sister when he was 10 years old and settled in Linwood, PA. He was a graduate of Holy Savior Grade School in Linwood and St. James High School in Chester. He attended Temple University and served in the US Army stationed in Fort Jackson, SC. He worked for North American Smelting Co. until it closed. He was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus St. Pius the 10th Chapter. He managed D's Imperial Bakery in Chester until he opened Amalfitano's Italian Bakery in 1978 on 6th and Greenhill in Wilmington, DE. The Bakery moved to New Castle, DE in 1993 and with the help of his children has grown to become one of the primary suppliers of bread and rolls to area restaurants and sandwich shops.
Lou was predeceased by his parents, Guiseppe and Teresa Amalfitano from Trainer, PA and nephew, Richard Lawrence, Jr. of California. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rosemarie Amalfitano; 2 children, Joseph and his fiancée, Bonnie Miller and daughter, Nicole, both of Wilmington; sister, Mary Lawrence and her husband, Richard; 3 nieces, Terri Sammons and her husband, Eric, Tara Lawrence and Laura Lawrence; 4 great-nieces, Marisa, Jade, Sydney and Madison; and numerous nieces and nephews from his wife's family.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 1 pm at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington where friends may call after 11:30 am. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 5610 Kirkwood Highway, Suite 5610-5612, Wilmington, DE 19808; or the American Cancer Society, 92 Read's Way, New Castle, DE 19720.
