Lucille Silverman Scheinbaum Died at the Millcroft Retirement Community in Newark, DE July 4, 2004 at the age of 85 of complications resulting from a long battle with emphysema. Lucille was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, attending Erasmus High School and Hunter College. She was a "WAVE" during World War II. In 1949, she and her husband, Al, joined the Frank Lloyd Wright cooperative community Usonia Homes in Pleasantville, NY. In Usonia, she found a safe harbor in which she established close friendships and a place to happily raise her family. Lucille was an intellectually curious, energetic, outspoken, courageous, loyal woman who loved her family and friends. She was passionately committed to those people and issues she believed in, encouraging her children and children with special needs for whom she was a teacher, advocate or caseworker. She worked with troubled teens and incarcerated women. Whether she was working on a political campaign or advocating literacy, she was a true helper. Her choice to fight for those who didn't have a voice helped to shape her daughters' choices of professions, academic counselor/administrator and psychotherapist. Lucille was a voracious reader, loved to play and win at scrabble, do the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzle, have a good political argument and go to foreign films, dance performances and the theater. She loved to write, talk, dance and sing. Lucille and Al were world travelers and she maintained a lifelong love of all things French. Six and a half years ago, Lucille and Al sold their home and moved to a retirement community in DE to be near the care and support of her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Roy. She responded to the changes and losses and the narrowing of her life with courage, acceptance and, at times, a sense of humor and relief. Lucille was the loving wife of Al Scheinbaum for 58 years; the devoted mother of Ann Lopata of Newark, DE and Irene Scheinbaum of El Cerrito, CA; mother-in-law to Roy Lopata and Mike Gabel; grandmother of Wendy Lopata of Los Angeles, CA, Rebekah Lopata of Philadelphia, PA and Sophie Gabel-Scheinbaum of Richmond, VA. She recently became a great grandmother to Wendy's son, Nolan Abraham Zweig. She was predeceased by her husband, Al, in 2002. "Mom, you suffered the loss of your family at a young age. We are thankful to have had you in our lives for such a long time. We will miss you and always remember you with gratitude and love." A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the Northern Westchester Ethical Society in Ossining, NY. Directions may be found on their website,
