Burford
Paulina Meeds Burford, age 78, died on August 1, 2008 in her home in Greenville, DE after a long illness.
"Poppy" was born in Wilmington in 1930 and attended The Tatnall School and The Madeira School in McLean,Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Hollyday Stone Meeds and Ellen duPont Meeds. In 1948, she married Daniel Hendrickson Wellford of Wilmington and they had four children. She later married Robert Franklin Burford in 1975. They lived in Colorado and Arizona and returned to her hometown of Wilmington in 1998. Poppy's greatest pleasure in life was being surrounded by her family and the people she loved. She was a strong supporter of the arts and many charitable organizations that promoted the welfare of others. Poppy served as an honorary board member of the "Friends of Goodstay" and contributed to the restoration of its grounds and gardens. "Goodstay" was her beloved childhood home.
Poppy is survived by her 4 children, Renee Wellford Shettle, Caroline Harrison Wellford, Dan Hendrickson Wellford and Polly Wellford Myers; 8 grandchildren, Jake Paul Krapf, Ben Harrison Krapf, Judson Wellford Trapnell, Natalie duPont Shettle, Caroline McLean Shettle, Renee Wellford Myers, Emily Hudson Myers and George Harrison Myers; 2 great grandchildren, Landyn Blake Krapf and Hayden Meeds Krapf; and 1 sister, Ellen Perkins Jennings. Poppy will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, and a true friend.
Services to honor Poppy and celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 11 am at the duPont family chapel, 505 Buck Road, Greenville, Delaware. There will be a reception for family and friends at the Vicmead Hunt Club following the services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19807; Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810; or Doctors Without Borders USA, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.
