Dr. Ralph Tomases, 88, passed away on August 6, 2009 at Christiana Hospital after a brief illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Wilmington, he was a graduate of P.S. duPont High School, attended the University of Delaware, and graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1943. A Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, he was captured at the Battle of the Bulge with the 106th Infantry Division and spent the remainder of WWII as a German prisoner of war, until being liberated by the Russian Army in April, 1945. Dr. Tomases practiced dentistry in Wilmington for over 60 years. He was Chief of the Dental Staff at the Delaware State Hospital, a member of the Delaware State Board of Dental Examiners, and served as President of the Delaware State Dental Society. He was active in the community, was a founding member of the Delaware Jewish Historical Society, and an accomplished photographer.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernice (nee Handelman); 3 children, Dr. Arthur Tomases and his wife Saralee of Brooklyn, NY, Faith Tomases of New York City and Wilmington, and Dr. Ruth Joffe and her husband Dr. Mark Joffe of Wynnewood, PA; sister, Helen Schutzman and brother, Norman Tomases, of Wilmington; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at Schoenberg Memorial Chapel on Friday August 7 at 12:30 pm. Shiva will be observed at 201 Saddler Lane, Surrey Park Saturday August 8 at 8:30 pm, Sunday August 9 at 7:30 pm, Monday August 10 at 7:15 am and 7:30 pm, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11 and 12 at 1363 W. Indian Creek Drive, Wynnewood, PA at 7:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the charity of your choice.
