Robert Welcher Obituary

Robert E. Welcher "Ozzie"

On August 14, 2012, we lost a true gentleman when "Ozzie" went to join the Angels in Heaven. He will forever be missed by those of us who loved and admired him. Ozzie was born on November 12, 1940, in Bayonne, New Jersey to Thomas G. Welcher and Ida E. Flagg Welcher, who preceded him in death - as did his brothers, Thomas Welcher and George K. Welcher.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Louisa Taylor Welcher, his son Robert Ryan Welcher and wife Dina, three grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Charlie Grace, Elyse Marie and Connor Robert. They will always remember him as their "Poppy."

He is also survived by his stepson, Gene L. Fulton of Middletown, DE, his sister, Lorraine E. Kelly of O'Fallon, IL, his brother, James E. Welcher of Newark, DE, and many nieces and nephews.

Ozzie attended Newark High School, and served for 6 years in the Delaware National Guard. Ozzie worked in construction his entire life; he was a heavy equipment operator, and also held positions as Foreman and Manager for Brandywine Construction Co., Normel, Kershaw, Glen Moore, and Cole Construction. After retiring, he returned to work at Artesian Water Company until his death.

Everyone who knew him became his friend. His honesty, strength and sense of fair play were very important to him. His sense of humor defined him, and will never be forgotten.

Ozzie worked hard and played hard. He especially enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, collecting things of all kinds and being creative with his hands. An amazing woodworker and artist, he created many things in and around his home.

The Welcher Family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude and many thanks to Heartland Hospice for helping to fulfill his wish of passing at home in his own bed. Thanks also to Monica, Stephanie and Judy for the comfort and caring they gave to all of the Family.

Please join our family in a Celebration of Ozzie's Life on September 15, 2012 at 12 noon at Whispering Horse Farm, 1403 Bohemia Mill Road, Middletown, Delaware. To express an online condolence, visit www.strano-feeley.com.

I had known Ozzie for most of my life. Most recently he worked for me as an equipment operator at Artesian Water. Though he was so much more than just an operator. If he had done all he could with the machine, he wouldn't just sit there, he would get down and grab a rake or a shovel, always ready to get dirty with the guys, as long as he could get an ice cream on the way back to the shop. I don't believe he could ever have an enemy,as he was always a gentelman. It was my privlage to have him as a co-worker and friend. He is already soreley missed. Chris Thurlow
