SHIRLEY HOROWITZ Obituary

Shirley C. Horowitz

Age 80, died peacefully at home on March 13, surrounded by her family, after a battle with lung cancer. Shirley was born in Harrisburg, PA to Rubin and Dorothy (Isaacman) Graeff.

She moved to Wilmington after she married Kenneth H. Horowitz, who predeceased her. Together they raised five children all of whom survive her; Karen of Washington, DC; Mark (Liz Mackall) of Newport, MN; Arnold of Wilmington; Elise of Richmond, VA; and Randy (Pat) of Chesterfield, VA. She is also survived by her sister Bernice Berkoff of Delray Beach, FL, and 5 grandchildren; Diana, Kenny, Kyle, Ally, and Dana Horowitz. Over the years, Shirley was active in the civil rights, anti-war, and social action movements. She worked for the Jewish Federation of Delaware, Planned Parenthood, Common Cause, and the Delaware Volunteer Legal Services Pro Bono Project. She worked to get kindergarten in the public schools and to reform the domestic violence laws and procedures. She also served as a Commissioner on the Delaware State Human Relations Commission. Shirley enjoyed working in her garden, her many friends, exercising at the JCC pool, and attending the Center for Lifelong Learning. She also enjoyed her trips to the beach with her children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 15 at 11 am at Congregation Beth Emeth, 300 West Lea Blvd. Wilmington, DE 19802 followed by interment at Beth Emeth Memorial Park. Shiva services will be held at the late residence Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ACLU, 100 W 10th St, Suite 309, Wilmington, DE 19801; Congregation Beth Emeth, or Sojourner's Place, 2901 Northeast Blvd, Wilmington, DE 19802 or the charity of your choice.
