Age 91, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, February 11, 2008.
A loving Dad, Poppop, and Poppy. His greatest source of pride was his family. His best times were when he and his loving wife Rose were surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School where he played football and was known as the "Golden Toe." A member of St. Helena's Church for over 50 years, he devoted many of those years as a football coach to the youth of the parish and was a long time member of the Athletic Council. He enjoyed spending time catching up with his friends at "Ernie's Barber Shop."
Steven was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Rose M. Ventresca; brothers, Frank, Joe, Ralph, and Alexander; and sister Mamie. He is survived by his 3 daughters, Carolann Horgan and her husband, Gerald, Eileen Gioffre and her husband, Dominic, and Linda Stevenson and her husband Ralph, all of Wilmington; 11 grandchildren, Kathleen Siegfried, Beth Ann LaPlante, Christine Patterson, Michael Horgan, Maureen Catalina, Christina Gioffre, Michele Gioffre Smith, D. Michael Gioffre, Sarah Rogers, Christopher Stevenson, and Katherine Stevenson; and 19 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Fierro, Helen Catalano, Anthony Ventresca, and Anna Figliola.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 14, from 6-8 pm, at St. Helena's Catholic Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809. Friends are also invited to call from 9-9:30 am, at the McCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 on Friday, February 15th. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 am, at St. Helena's. Interment will follow the mass at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Helena's Church.
