Stuart Cotler Obituary

Dr. Stuart Cotler

AGE: 63 • Chadds Ford, PA

Stuart passed away suddenly on February 23, 2014. He was born on April 3, 1950 in Brooklyn, NY to Nathan and Terry Cotler. Stuart received his BA (pre-dental) from Columbia University in 1972 followed by his D.D.S. from Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry. In 1978, he completed his MS in Orthodontics also from Case Western. Stuart was a member of several professional organizations including the American Dental Association; Dental Associations of Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; American Association of Orthodontics; and the World Federation of Orthodontics.

Stuart was President of Cotler Orthodontics for more than 30 years establishing offices in Cleveland, OH followed by offices in Mays Landing, NJ and Exton, PA. Most recently he was employed by American Dental Solutions in Pottstown and Wyomissing, PA.

Stuart was an avid history buff. His passion for sports, both present and past was unending. He was a huge NY Yankee fan and the reining family Jeopardy champion. The delivery of the Sunday NY Times gave him reading pleasure throughout the week.

Stuart loved each of his children with all his heart and was blessed to be able to attend his son's first collegiate baseball game. This was something that he dreamed of doing for a very long time. All of his family and friends meant the world to him.

Stuart was preceded in death by his father Nathan. He is survived by his mother, Terry; sister Karen; his loving wife, Cindy (Gooding), of 22 years; three children, Naomi, Dara, and Brady; and three grandchildren, Omani, Odessa and Braelyn.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 1, 2014 at 11:30 am at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike Wilmington 19803. Friends are welcome for visitation beginning at 10am. I knew dr. Colter as my doctor but every time I went for my braces he always brought smile's to the room. I was always surprised to see how happy he always was. And I remember the last thing he ever told me was how I would get my braces off before my b-day. And he said he was exited to see my pearly whites. Now when I go back for my braces It won't feel the same. I will always keep mr colter in my prayers. R.I.P. Brianna Torres (age 14)

Dear Cotler Family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Cotler was wonderful and I am going to miss him so much. I was one of his older patients and had the worst anxiety about braces. I was the biggest wimp and he went out of his way to baby me at every visit. He'd always say "here's my favorite patient" & I would reply "you know I'm your worst patient ever" & he would just laugh. I had some really bad teeth & I only gave him a year & a half to work with me & he did an amazing job. When I got my braces off I gave him a mug with a little stuffed bear because I always called him my papa bear. I was still seeing him for retainer checks & he would always ask me to let him put braces back on for just 6 months & at my last appt. I finally agreed & he was telling me some of his plans for when he retires. I just can't believe he won't be at my next appt. I took a planter & card for the family to the Exeter office & they told me they had no way to get it to you & were not allowed to give me an address so I wanted you to know I am keeping it in my home in his memory & if any one of you would happen to come near my area you are welcome to have it. My thoughts & prayers are with you all. He will be deeply & sadly missed.

Very sad to hear that my daughters orthodontist has passed. He was such a kind man and very good at what he did. When we would see him we would always chat sports. My son is a year ahead of his son and also plays baseball so we would share our stories. He also gave good advice to my daughter. He will not be forgotten. Will always think of his kindness when I see my daughters beautiful smile! Thoughts and prayers to your family. God bless...

My son is a patient of Dr. Cotler. He was a wonderful, kind hearted person and he always talked about his kids and wife and his face lit up when he would mention them. We have only known him for over a year but he made my son's appointments easy and pain free. He will be greatly missed.

He did the braces for 2 of my children. He remembered my sons name and that he played football. I waited too long to get my daughter braces. He was so good with her. Making an unpleasant process as pleasant as possible. He was so proud talking about his son playing college baseball. He was by far the most genuine doctor that I have ever been around. We are so sorry for your loss!!
