Krussman, Sr.
Waldemar (Walt) Thomas Krussman, Sr., age 85, of Wilmington, DE, died after a long illness on October 2, 2008, surrounded by his family.
Walt was born in 1923 in Flint, MI to Charlotte C. and Waldemar G. Krussman and moved permanently to Wilmington in 1930. He graduated from P.S. duPont High School, Class of 1941. Walt began his studies at the University of Delaware in the fall of 1941, and continued in the spring of 1946 after military service during WW II. He graduated with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in 1948. He served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot of the B-24 Liberator bomber from 1943 until 1946, reaching the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Walt began his career at National Vulcanized Fiber in 1948, earning in 1959 his Certification as a Professional Engineer. He joined DuPont in 1962 where he held many positions including Plant Engineer, and retired from DuPont in 1985. Walt loved to travel with his family, crisscrossing the country, and traveling numerous times to Europe, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean Alaska, and Hawaii. His trip to China included stops in Korea and Hong Kong. His final trip two years ago was a cruise through the Panama Canal When not at home or traveling, Walt could be found at the beach, either in Sea Isle City, New Jersey or Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Walt's other passions included reading, golf, big band music, exercising at the Newark Senior Center, and working on projects around the house.
Walt was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Janice Yearsley Krussman, his sister, Mary Louise Laker, and his brother-in-law, Earnest H. Laker. He is survived by his son, W. Thomas Krussman, Jr. and Tom's wife, Lisa S. Krussman; daughter, Dian K. Sutton and Dian's husband David C. Sutton; brother, Colwyn, S. Krussman and Col's wife, Marilyn J. Krussman; four grandchildren: Daniel Sutton, Katharine Sutton, Rachel Sutton and Ian Krussman; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 10 - 11 am, on Friday, October 10, 2008 at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME at 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE followed by funeral services at 11 am at the same location. Interment at Greenhill Cemetery at 3112 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE will immediately follow the funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Walt's memory to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY. 10016 (www.kidney.org).
