Walter Skinner Obituary

Walter C. Skinner

Walter C. Skinner, age 92, former longtime resident of Fairfax in Wilmington, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2013 at the Delaware Veterans Home.

Walt was born in Uno, VA, son of the late Charles and Mamie Skinner. He graduated from Conrad High School (as did his siblings Charles and Dorothy). Later, Tech Sgt. Skinner fought in the US Army Air Corp. (8th Air Force) 351st BG, 510th during WWII as a top turret gunner on the B17 out of Polebrook, England and was honorably discharged in 1945.

After the war, he worked as a leather tannery foreman for JE Rhoades & Sons in Wilmington and retired as a Chief Custodian for the Brandywine School District. He especially enjoyed his time with family and friends and was always there when help was needed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia and is survived by his daughter, Patricia; his son, Wayne, son-in-law Ben; grandsons; Michael, Kyle and Forrest and great grandson Ethan.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, 500 McKennan's Church Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, Delaware Chapter. 240 N. James Street, Suite 100A, Newport, DE 19804 or Delaware Hospice, Inc., 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

December 13, 2013

The loss of a love one is very devastating, at sometimes we don't know where to turn, Thankful we are to God, we can reach out to him in prayer, please read Psalms 65:2, it tell us that all sorts will go to the “Hearer of prayer”.

During This sad time, please lean on the “God of All Comfort” 2nd Cor. 1: 3-4.

Mr. Skinner was like a father to me when I lost my dad at a very young age. Mr. Skinner helped me in more ways then I could ever express. He is the best of the best.

I had the opportunity to know Walt Skinner first by meeting him through my Dad, Ernest Kresge many years ago. Then the Skinner family moved across the street from us in Fairfax. On many occasions I would visit with Mr. Skinner. I always enjoyed his company and his kindness. Often we would sit and talk about boats and have a cup of hot tea together. He was a gentlemen's gentleman. Later on after we moved I would occasionally stop by and see him and he was always glad to see me. In closing, he was a genuine person, a great American and he served his country in one of the most dangerous missions in history. He was always very humble and never would brag or talk about himself or his exploits as a war hero. This breed is fading away. He will be greatly missed.
