William Porter Obituary

William H. Porter Jr.

On April 20, 2011 William H. Porter Jr. suddenly passed away.

Born on October 7, 1936, in Wilmington, Mr. Porter graduated from Tower Hill School in 1955 and attended the University of Miami. He served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Knox. After military service, he worked briefly for the DuPont Company and then for his father at Porter Chevrolet in Newark, Delaware. In 1965, he started Allstate Auto Leasing Co., acting as President until he dissolved the company in 1984. At the same time, he owned and operated three National Car Rental franchises in Delaware. Beyond his unending devotion and appreciation for those he held dear, Mr. Porter loved nothing more than creating music. He was an accomplished piano player of jazz standards and played everyday. He shared his passion for music with everyone. A water ski instructor in his early 20's, Mr. Porter enjoyed boating throughout his life, as well as playing golf and tennis.

Mr. Porter is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Lori L. Porter; his son, William H. "Chip" Porter, III and his wife Hillary S. Kelleher; daughter, Devon Porter Fleming and husband David W. Fleming and their three children Hayley, Wilson, and Eve; his brother and his wife, Richard C. Porter and Betsey Porter, their three children Corey, Tracey, and Scott, and several nieces and nephews.

Bill will be deeply missed by those who loved him.

Funeral services are private. A reception will be held on May 14, at 2 pm at 18 Brandywine Falls to allow close friends to pay their respects to Mr. and Mrs. Porter.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the American Stroke Association, P.O. Box 15120, Chicago, IL 60693.

May God Bless You.
