Arthur Jones Obituary

Arthur "Art" Wadsworth Jones passed away December 12, 2022, in Media, PA. He was preceded in death by his sister Elizabeth "Beth" Gilson of Jacksonville, Florida, and by his parents, Ethel Grace (Turner) Jones and Donald Prentiss Jones of Media, Pennsylvania. Born August 20, 1934, Art grew up in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, graduating from Swarthmore High School in 1952. He graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, in 1956 with a Bachelors in Economics, received a Masters in Education, specializing in math, from Boston University in 1957, and later completed his Doctorate Equivalency in Math Education by completing courses at various colleges and universities including West Chester University, Carleton College and Wesleyan University. "Mr. Jones" was a talented math teacher who was much loved and respected by both students and colleagues. He worked for Rose Tree Media School District (RTMSD) (Indian Lane Junior High School, Springton Lake Middle School, and Penncrest High School) as a math teacher from 1957 until his retirement in 1992. Art loved teaching and even after retiring continued to teach math classes at Delaware Community College, Neumann University and Widener University until 2013. Art met his loving wife, Louise, and many life-long friends while working at Indian Lane in the 1960's. Art and Louise began their life together living in Glen Mills, and later moved to Middletown Township in Media. He and Louise were lovingly devoted to one another throughout their 57 years of marriage. A true partnership. Art was an avid bridge player and stock trader throughout his life. Art always had a special place in his heart for the many dogs that fulfilled his life and were graced by his love (Duke, Duchess, Buffy, Swinger, Violet, JJ, Holly and Kaylee). His favorite place on earth was Sebec Lake in Maine, where he loved growing up spending summers, and imparting his love of the lake onto his children and grandchildren. Art was a devoted husband, loving father and wonderful Grandpa Art. He is survived by his two children: Donald W. Jones (Kate) of Riva, Maryland, and Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Jones of London, England; and by his two grandchildren: Brenna Campbell Jones and Declan Arthur Jones. Art had a truly kind and loving spirit with a quiet sense of humor that made it a pleasure to be in his presence. He was a bright shining light to family and friends. A service/memorial for family and friends will be announced in the near future. If you choose to honor his legacy it is asked that you donate to your favorite animal shelter.

I believe that Mr. Jones taught with my husband, Bernie Stein at Indian Lane Junior High. Bernie was a science teacher there. He died in October 2022. I remember Mr. Jones as a kind, caring person, who was known as a dedicated teacher. My sincerest condolences.
sincerely, Jean Steiin

Mr. Jones will always be one of my favorite teachers - not because I loved math (he taught me algebra I, algebra II and calculus), but because he could absolutely "read" students and would do anything it took to help us learn, even if it meant handing the chalk to another student who could explain it in a way he couldn“t. It was a blessing to be taught by him. Prayers for comfort.

I remember Mr. Jones from Penncrest HS in 1976-77. He was a gifted math teacher but also could relate well with the students. I hope he had a wonderful life.

Some people are lucky enough to be taught by a great teacher. Those of us who went to Indian Lane were luckier: We had Mr. Jones and "Miss Lynn," two of the very best. Sincere condolences.
