James Sandone Obituary

1939-2014 James J. Sandone James J. "Slim" Sandone of Glenolden PA died on December 19, 2014. Born in Drexel Hill in 1939, he was raised in West Philadelphia and in 1957, he graduated from St. Thomas More High School in Philadelphia. From 1959 to 1964, he was employed with the United States Department of Defense, in Philadelphia, where he worked in the data processing department. It was there that me met his future wife, Carol, with whom he has 3 grown children; Steven, Debra and James, Jr. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1962 and was honorably discharged in 1967. He later went on to employment as a project manager with Polselli & Angelucci, a general contracting firm located in Glenolden, from 1966 to 1972. He also attended St. Joseph's University, Pierce School of Business and Temple University, where he completed courses in general business, accounting and architecture. In 1974, he started his own business, Delaware County Janitorial Service, Inc. When it began, the business was operated out of his home basement as a simple janitorial company. Over time, the company expanded to become a full service restoration company, known as Delaware County Fire Restoration, Inc., specializing in restoration of property damage by water, fire, smoke, wind and other perils. In 1979, Mr. Sandone was elected to the position of 3rd Ward Commissioner of Darby Township, PA. He served the residents of Darby Township ever since, having been re-elected eight times. As commissioner, he was also appointed to serve as Police Commissioner to monitor the general operations of the Darby Township Police Department. One of the highlights of his career occurred in 1992, when he had the pleasure of meeting President George H. W. Bush, who at the time was the sitting President of the United States. He is survived by his wife, Carol E. (nee Smith); his children, Steven A. Sandone (Mary Ann) , Debra S. Smith (Michael) and James Sandone, Jr. (Erika). Also survived by 8 grandchildren, Anthony, Jonathan, Lucia and Massimo Sandone; Vincent and Nicholas and Michael Smith and Jade Klein; 1 great-grandchild, Mario Santini and was predeceased by grandson, Christopher Smith. Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Friday evening, Dec. 26. 4 to 7 PM, and Saturday morning, 9-10:45 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1 Fatima Drive, Secane, PA 19018 followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Jimmy Jr. and I were best friends growing up and I remember the first time I met Mr. Sandone when I was about 10 yrs. old at a Cub Scout function. Soon after he would introduce me as his "adopted son". He treated me like I was his son. Mr. Sandone was one of the most generous, kind, caring, thoughtful, nonjudegmental people I have ever known & he always put himself before others. I'll always remember that. I am a better person for knowing him. Carol, Steven, Debbie, & Jimmy took very good care of him these past two years! God bless you Mr. Sandone, now you are with your parents.

Years ago as a young committee woman in Lansdowne, our pathos crossed at different functions. He and my dad were friends so when he would see me Jim reminded me of the work ethic of my father's and his generation. To remember who helps you along the way, show compassion and assist people that need you. He also made sure that we all took care of each other as family. Now almost 30 years later, the contacts and friendships I made in Darby Township over the years, are some of my most treasured friends. He was aninspiration and positive role model to so many of us, so many are indebted to him for his guidance. His sense of family and infectious smile will always have place in my heart. Prayers to the entire Sandone Family.

Jim was truly a gentleman in every sense of the word. He always made my husband and I feel like we were always a member of his family. When my daughter married Jimmy I was actually afraid to meet Slim Jim and after a few minutes in his company I knew I was wrong. We will truly miss you Jim. Now you can sleep with the angels and your parents as I know you missed them terribly.

December 23, 2014

Slim was a lifelong friend who I will truly miss. He was in my wedding party 50 years ago, and one of the best football players Our Lady of the Rosary ever had. Rest in peace.

To The Sandone Family:
Words can hardly express what your father has meant to my family and myself over so many wonderful years.
As a young man Jim took an intrest in myself and put me to work at the age of 16. He developed in me what my father had taught me "Hard work and dedication will make you in to a good man". Also with that hard work came honesty and the willingness to alway's help a friend or neighbor when they were in need. You said most of all these things were to be accomplished with respect and loyalty.
Jim loved his people as they him. He taught me what roots meant and to always have time for your people. Well those people are the wonderful citizens of Darby Township to whom i proudly serve as their Police Chief.
As i know that i speak for a lot of people when i say i would never be where i'm at without Jim's help, because that's what Jimmy Sandone Sr did best ,HELP PEOPLE !
Thank you Jim Sandone Sr for being part of my life and alway's know that it was my Honor to have known You !

Thanx Lenny McDevitt Jr
