Joseph DeVoy Obituary

1922-2015 Joseph (Joe) DeVoy, 92, a long time resident of Glenolden, passed peacefully in the early morning of February 22 at St. Francis Country House. Joe spent much of his childhood on a farm in Pennsgrove, NJ. He and his loving wife Stella moved to Glenolden 40 years ago. Joe retired from RCA and he subsequently went to work for several more years at Boeing. Until a few years ago, Joe was an avid golfer but his real love was baseball and during his youth he played amateur baseball in New York. He was particularly proud to be the nephew of the late Whitey Witt, a professional baseball player who played outfield for New York Yankees during the Babe Ruth era. Joe enjoyed vacationing in Florida and Wildwood, NJ with his wife Stella along with his in-laws the late Antoinette and Tony Sulpizio and other family members. Joe will always be remembered for his ever present smile and positive outlook. Joe is survived by Stella, his loving and caring wife of 40 years. Joe was step father to the late Richard Piroli, the late Carol Piroli and the late Ronald Piroli. Joe is also survived by his grandchildren Gina Krick, Richard Piroli, Audra Gavaghan, Nicole Piroli and Ronald Piroli, Jr and 13 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass Wednesday, March 4 at 10:30 am St. Joseph’s Church, 500 Woodlawn Ave, Collingdale where friends may call from 9 am. Int. SS Peter & Paul Cem. Unknown facts about my Father.
(American Hero)Army WW11 veteran spent 3 years(1942-1945) in the Philippines. He earned medals for first landings on several Philippine Islands.
Lost hearing in left ear due to combat shelling noise. He also engaged in hand to hand & eye to eye combat with the Japanese as many of our Soldier's did.
Joe worked for Electric Boat in the ("1950's)as a sheet metal worker in New London, CT. where they built and launched the first Nuclear Submarine(Nautilus). The Nautilus was also the first submarine to travel under the Polar Ice Cap.
In the(1960's) he worked as a Draftsman for the company that made the computer board & parts that went into the First Space Shuttle.
These are only a few of his accomplishments.
Rest in Peace Dad.
