Stephen Courtin Obituary

Stephen E. “Weaver” Courtin, age 79 of Florida, formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away on August 6, 2022 in St Augustine, Florida. He was born in Darby, PA on September 21, 1942 and raised in Woodlyn by the late Edward and Dorothy Courtin. He is also preceded in death by 2 daughters, Nance Marie Vanzant and Barbara Anne Keenan. Steve attended St. James High School in Chester, PA and St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA where he was an exceptional overall athlete and basketball player. He played for the late, great Jack McKinney at St. James High School and the late, great Dr. Jack Ramsay at St. Joseph’s University. He was then drafted in 1964 to the Cincinnati Royals, but was quickly traded to the Philadelphia 76ers where he played for 2 seasons. Later he played for the Wilkes Barre Barons and Wilmington Blue Bombers in the Eastern Professional Basketball League. Some of the many highlights of his collegiate basketball career were being named the 1962 MVP for Quaker City Tournament and the 1964 Robert V. Geasey Memorial Award as the Big Five MVP. In 1980, he was named to both the Big Five Hall of Fame and the St. Joe’s Hall of Fame. Following his basketball career, he began working at WEEZ Radio in Chester, PA followed by WAMS Radio in Wilmington, DE where he was General Manager. Later, he ended his career in advertising for car dealerships in Wilmington. He was an avid lifetime golfer and belonged to many clubs in the area where he excelled in the game. He was fiercely loyal to his family, friends and the SJU Basketball community who will miss him very much, especially the incredible stories and the guaranteed fun times that followed him. The Hawk Will Never Die! Steve is survived by his life partner, Leslie Carey; a daughter, Terilyn Henry (Dennis); 6 grandchildren, Danielle Henry, Devon Henry, Casey Keenan, Stephanie Lauletta, Cort Vanzant and Claudia Vanzant. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 10-11:20 am followed by a funeral mass at 11:30 am on Monday, August 15, 2022 at St. Mary Magdalen RC Church, 7 Sharpley Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will follow in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, Pa. Leslie so sorry to hear the passing of Steve i work with Steve at Boeing Vertol in the 60s we played together on there basketball and softball teams he will not be forgotten by all of us
