What mattered the most to me was you! Just framed your Saint James hat and varsity letter. Tim listens to your messages and I see his face reveal the sadness as he misses you. Brendan wants to be a police officer to follow in your footsteps, and Joey always says, "I miss pops cookies. You will have to really try hard mom to be like pop."

April 27, 2016

Today is a sad day, but we all have so many wonderful memories to help us get through the sadness and loss of this great man. Tim Gill as we know him would be so happy to see all of his family and friends here today. It is without reservation that we mention that not a day went by where we didn't hear Tim tell a story, we all heard them, we all laughed with him, and we may have heard them more than once, but we didn't mind. His stories ranged from him growing up in the days of Chester, the police force, his coaching days at the Chester Biddy, his experiences in the army, camping with his friends, Constantinos, Seaman's, Catons, Snyders, and Ross's, being awnry with the Moya Mensing Fire Company, his good friends, Jimmy Lewis and Billy Bernhardt.

Dad was a prankster, he always was looking for the unique things to do or to make people laugh. Some of you may recall when you had a Christmas tree in your front lawn, a doll head in a bag at the door or a skull and cross bones sign left on your house, after watching a scary movie. I remember him planning the progressive dinner parties with all his friends, there was a theme, and everyone had to cook a different part of the meal at each of his friend's houses. Playing musical instruments, dressing in toga costumes, or just plain having fun.

There were many times that music made it to the car while singing Irish songs, especially the Notre Dame and St. James fight songs, Religious hymns, he always sounded like a priest, those wonderful show tunes like Hello Dolly, or the top songs of the 30s Tony Dorsey, Glenn Miller Band, or Bing Crosby. I remember there wasn't a day that went by in the car when I was younger, without hearing Daddy's Little Girl. It was sung loud and clear for everyone to hear.

I wasn't the most precious lady in his life, Tooter and Tootsie made their way into his heart, and because of their great talents, he can't eat anyone else's cooking, no one cleans the way they do, cooks the way they do, and no one treated him as special as they both did. As two best friends, they shared so much in life, they both loved Tim.
Sometimes we don't realize how much a person really does until you write something down. When dad was asked to send a resume to St. James when he was nominated for the St. James Wall of Honor, I had the privilege of typing his resume. It is six pages long! Yes, he remembered everything he did, and I couldn't believe how much he accomplished. How did one man do all this on any given week, and still have time to be the father he was to my brothers Bucky, Gooch, and I. It just was impossible. Not to mention, he always had to have two jobs. When asked, Why are you doing that? We had to have dancing lessons, play sports, go to camps, and have the best in clothing, sneakers, and mostly the best Christmas celebrations ever. That' right, he would say, I lived during the depression, you have to work if you ever want to get ahead, and that Ben Franklin quote would be shouted out, Save a penny for a rainy day.

Dad was fond of all holidays, especially Christmas. The train display and our Christmas decorations were part of his most sacred projects. I remember the pink wonderland he made me for me. He would say it's special just for you, my only girl. Every house, tree decoration was pink in my honor. Our dining room was always full of toys, games, and special things we asked for. Never a disappointment. Only mom's credit card bills were his disappointment, after the holiday. Dad was prepared though, baking pies at the diner for ten cents a pie, working at the track in the summer, or working overtime as a police officer.

With regard to holidays, Halloween was another favorite time, walking around for trick or treating, designing Halloween haunted houses, buying creepy masks to scare people, and mostly placing in the camping Warwick Halloween costume contest. There was always time to paint his face, wait for the right time during our camping trips to come out of the woods to have fun and see the fright on everyone's faces. Cousins would ask before coming, will Uncle Timmy scare us?

Our dad had many first over the years, the first to make the varsity track team as a freshman at St. James, the first one to graduate the FBI Academy with the first three female agents, the first to coach a world biddy league championship team, the first legion baseball coach to win an eleven year old American legion state title. He was first secretary for APCO the American and police communication operations committee, first to start a training program for 911. First to take his grandchildren to the little league World Series. The first police officer in Chester to start a tactical squad. One thing we all can say is that our dad knew how to make life fun! He had all spunk of a teenager, the creative play of a child, and the worldly knowledge of any adult. Outplay anyone in poker, win the biggest grudge matches in an argument, and definitely take the lead in a trivia contest. He could talk to anyone, make friends with anyone. There were doctors, nurses, and techs from all his hospital stays to attest to the stories, the enjoyment, and the fun that he even brought to his hospital stays. Many of them would say they wished they could stay in his room all night and talk to him, but they had to get back to work.

No one could deny that my dad loved sports. He loved the Penn relays on television, he never missed an Olympic event, and I even recall sharing those moments with him growing up. As a matter of fact, most victorious sporting events were spent with him. Even him catching my first puck at a hockey game. There were years of coaching, if you haven't heard the coaching experiences at St. Michaels in the old gym on the roof, I am shocked. Winning games with the boys was easy since Bucky was his point guard, but until he took over the girls program in stately fashion. We had girls sticking others with pins, asking, what is a lay-up, Mr. Gill? Anita bit me Mr. Gill, then bite her back he responded. a team protesting that he was a priest, and he made his girls play like animals, just to find out that the referees said he wasn't a priest, he was a pillar of his community, and probably one of the best instructors and coaches of basketball in the county. We all remember him being so proud of us and our ability to get to the championship, that he had us cheer when we lost the championship, and the other team who won being stunned at our enthusiasm and positivity at the end of the big loss.

Police work was second nature to him. For many of the young police cadets, they called it the Tim Gill training force. He was able to train anyone to pass the police requirements, and even held study sessions to help many young men venture into police work. His other passion was implementing 911 and beginning a training program that still exists today. This is something that made my dad very proud, and brought character, respect, and discipline to the dispatchers' trade, and their life saving efforts to bring help and safety to the unknown caller. Many of his coworkers will remember in his off time, he serenaded them with harmonica playing and singing just to reduce the stress. Little did they know, those harmonica lessons were much appreciated at Delaware County Community because when he asked as a child to take the lessons, his family couldn't afford them at 25 cents a lesson.
Dad made everything fun! He loved the beach house at Garden Lake, and even so modest about buying a little modular home he couldn't even find the right one until Gooch said, Dad do you want to swim at this end of the beach with everyone else, don't you want the biggest one, so you can look down the beach at everyone, and you could stay here on the private one. He never cared about material things, he just wanted to be conservative, honest, faithful, and true to his family. We had a lot of fun with him at the beach house, pig roasts, horseshoe pit, paddle boat rides, long days on the beach with his grandchildren, Cozy Morley nights, and plenty of baking in the kitchen. He always made it known that this would be a place, so that we always would have somewhere to stay in the Wildwoods.

His hobbies were restricted in his elder years to crocheting, hats, scarves, and blankets. His recent record of crocheting 80 hats, made their way to ST. James to give to charity. He liked to read, an avid reader, and knew any current event, or sports score you needed to find out. He loved to cook. His passion started after his bypass surgery and heart condition in 85, but cooking healthy turned into a passionate love for baking again. His kitchen turned into a bake fest every night, anything from cookies, pastries, cakes, and pies. Tootsie and my dad sure did know how to make us fat. He shared his love of baking with all of us.

Our dad never missed a game, event, or any important moment in our lives, more or less, he never missed a beat. He beat his heart to death. He lived life to the fullest. Two favorite saying were, Tricia, I never met a man, I didn't like. He always said, When you live, you live in clover, because when you are dead, you are dead all over, and he really liked his Irish toast..The pulse of your heart is in Ireland. Now we can honestly say, The Pulse of his heart is in heaven. I like the fight he fought. He always said to his players in basketball, Play like it's your last seconds on earth. He knew how to fight, but his time ran out, and the game is over, but he was a champion of a man, the best son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. We love you POP! We applaud your life, your spirit, and your love will live forever in all of us.

Remembered Joy

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free!
I follow the plan God laid for me.

I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all

I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life's been full, I've savoured much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.

Tricia, Bucky & family - we are so sorry for your loss. We had some good times at Slippery Rock homecoming, camping at Warwick Woods and at the shore. We could listen forever to your dad's stories especially about Notre Dame. He was an amazing person, always smiling & whistling .

Lot's of good memories of Timmy one of the best We went to St Mikes together, St James. The Moya Juniors Fire Co. Drafted and went in the Army the same day He was also a very fast runner. A funny story. I was at a Villanova football game with my two sons. An extra point was kicked , A kid caught the football and ran out of the stadium. A man ( Timmy) jumped out of the stands . ran down the field and everyone laughed. Soon he came back into the stadium, a big smile on his face and the ball. The crowd roared. My son's often retold that story.

Too frequently aging athletes who reminisce about past glories do not get the chance to share with those who guided them - coaches and volunteers who gave unselfishly in victory and defeat. Not so with Timmy and myself. After the 50th anniversary of the Biddy Championship team last year (which timmy coached along with Vaugh Caton), I had the chance to get reacquainted with "coach" and stayed in touch throughout his last year. I loved the man...the entire '64 team did...he will not be forgotten...
