DELAWARE — Sophia Megalis passed from this life on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 in Delaware, Ohio at age 89.
Born in Dorio, Greece on Sept. 14, 1925 to Georgia and John Katsikaris. She married Nicholas Megalis in 1955 and immigrated to the United States to join him in Warren, Ohio. They had two children, Georgia and Thomas (Anastasios), and enjoyed a long and loving marriage until Nicholas' death in 1993. She had a strong work ethic, worked until age 75, and retired from Trumbull Memorial Hospital. She had an amazing sense of humor, was a talented, professionally-trained seamstress and enjoyed music, dancing and cooking.
Sophia was a devout Orthodox Christian and a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church for over 50 years. She was deeply devoted to God, her friends and family; lived her life with integrity and perseverance; and always appreciated the large and small joys of life.
She is survived by her family in the United States, Canada and Greece, including her daughter, Georgia (Daniel) O'Bryan; son, Thomas (Denise Painter) Megalis; and grandchildren, Nicholas, Olivia and Zachary Megalis and Katie Sophia O'Bryan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brothers and sisters, Gus Katsikaris, Haralambos Katsikaris, Demetra Hadjis, Vasiliki Eliopolis, Eleni Liakopolos, and Fotini Papagiorgiou.
She was deeply loved by many and will be sorely missed. May her memory be eternal. Her family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Willow Brook Christian Village in Delaware for their friendship and care during the past 7 years.
Funeral Service will be at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Columbus, Ohio at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015. Trisagion Service and burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren on Thursday, Feb. 12.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Columbus, Ohio; St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Warren, Ohio; or Willow Brook Christian Village, Delaware, Ohio.
Arrangements are in care of Robinson Funeral Home, 32 W. Winter St., Delaware.
