Christopher Gaul Obituary

Christopher Jameson Stephens Gaul

Newport Beach, California-Christopher Jameson Stephens Gaul ("Jessie" to his family and friends), 22, of Newport Beach, California, passed away on June 17, 2014 in California. A native of Salisbury, MD, Jessie was born on April 6th, 1992 at PRMC to Dr. James Richard Gaul and Lynn Karen Stephens Gaul.

Jessie was a 2010 graduate of the Salisbury School and was attending Orange Coast College. He spent several summers particpating in the La Merced Medical Mission traveling to Nicaragua which inspired his dream of becoming a trauma surgeon. He also photographed pro surfers with his burgeoning company Full Grizzly Photography and was part owner of ABC Surf Shop in Newport Beach, California. An avid surfer himself, Jessie never felt better than when he was in the waves. He was also an experienced hunter, an accomplished marksman and a member of the Salisbury Gun Club. Jessie had a generous heart, was a well known lover of cats and dogs, and a mentor to recovering addicts. Bob Marley, one of Jessie's favorite artists, said a man's greatness is measured "in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively." By that measurement, Jessie was pretty great. And one gnarly Ming.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his beloved grandmother, Jean H. Stephens, and sister, Jamie Lynn Flacco and her husband Jordan of Tuscaloosa, AL.

A memorial service will be held Saturday June 28th, 2014 at 11:00 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Camden Ave., Salisbury, MD.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the La Merced Medical Mission, c/o Peninsula Plastic Surgery, 314 W Carroll Street, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Arrangments are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home, PA, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804. Please visit www.hollowayfh.com to express condolences to the family.

Jess, I have ridden with your father every year since you departed from this earth in your honor and with respect to you and your entire family. I renamed the yearly "Seagull Century " to the "Jess Century" in your honor. You are always to be remember as one who embraced life with a non-quitting spirit. That spirit leaves on forever in me with honor and endless respect for you. I missed last year's century because of the covid crisis and some problems of my own. I had a severe bike spill on May 16, 2020 that broke my collar bone along with 8 staples in my head known as a subdural hematoma, ending with a heart stent put in December 2020, a little bit of a setback. I am reaching down deep in efforts to get back riding with your father in your memory and for the positive family's memory of their "Jess Man"! I am not sure how it will work out, but you can rest assure that I will rip a page out of your life's history book and do my best to get back to living life by riding in your honor. Your memory is timeless and goes on forever and that is why i have ridden with your father over the years. Take care my man, and may God bless.

You were too young to be gone this soon. I'm sorry that I only knew you through the computer. To your family, I am so sorry that you have to go through this. It's not fair or right for parents to lose children or siblings to lose one of their own. I lost my brother suddenly ten years ago, but I also believe that I will get to see him again and that he watches out for me. Mourn as you see fit, on your timeline, in whatever way makes you feel most at peace.

DR. GAUL AND FAMILY MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOU IN THE LOSS OF CHRIS

Debbie Henry

June 25, 2014

My dearest Dr. Gaul and wife. I know this must be a very painful time for you both having lost your son.
You may not remember me, but I certainly remember you. I was in the chemo lab about 13-14 years ago with my sister who had breast cancer. While we were sitting there talking about my not being able to hear in one ear and going to school and being made fun of by my classmates and feeling so frustrated, you got up, wheeling your IV pole to the wallphone and you placed a call to your office. You turned to me and asked what my name was and you made an appt for me to be in your office the next day. You burst my eardrum to release the water that was the cause of my deafness. You also said to me that when I got the bill to call you and you would take care of it for me. My sister, Anna Owens, is also a patient of yours and she swears by you. She lost her 23-yr-old daughter 8 years ago; I also had 3 brothers who lost their young children in their 20's or early 30's the following year. I can't say that I know what you're feeling but I can say that I know a little bit about what's ahead.
I didn't know your son, but I certainly knew his dad and his dad's heart. If your son was anything like you, you should pat your self on the back for his being such a good kid.
I'm praying for you and your wife and I ask that God surround you in His loving arms for a long time to come. If you believe in Spirit, then you must know that your son is all around you always...may He comfort you and bring you peace in those moments of loss, sleepless nights, and agonizing loss of a child. May God bless and keep you.

Dr Gaul and wife, I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your son. I don't know if you remember me Dr. Gaul, but I certainly remember you when you were going through treatments in the chemo lab in 2001 or so. You overheard a conversation I was having with my sister who was getting chemo for breast cancer. I was deaf in one ear and was frustrated about it because I couldn't hear. You rose up, wheeling your IV pole and made a call to your office and made an appt. for me that week to burst my eardrum and flush out the water so I could hear and you told me to call your office when I got the bill because you were going to take care of it.
If your son was even a smidget of who you are as a man, then he had to be a good boy and son. In his obit, it did say that he lived his life with integrity ... as you do.
I will keep you and your family in my prayers for the coming months and pray that God will see you through this terrible, terrible time of losing your child.
My sister, Anna Owens, who is a patient of yours also lost her child; my 3 brothers also lost one their
children so I have a glimpse of what lies ahead for you and your wife as parents.
May God keep Chris in the palm of His hands and bring comfort to you and his mom.
If you believe in Spirit, then you know that every moment Chris is hovering around you and will always be with you.

Remembered Jess, as a fine young man, just wished that I got to know him better. He was always respectful to me and I hope that he has peace. May God accept him into His arms. May God bless the Jess man.
