Derrick Handy Obituary
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Derrick Terrell Handy Sr., 32, of Gainesville died Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the University of Florida, Shands in Gainesville. Born in Salisbury he was the son of John E. Handy of Westover and Cynthia Odoom and stepfather, Albert Odoom of Fruitland.
Derrick was a graduate of Mardela High School. He worked for Red Lobster in Gainesville and was involved with March of Dimes walks for many years.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by: his fianc?e, Lakeisha Lee of Salisbury; son, Derrick T. Handy Jr.; brother, Eric L. Handy Sr. of Salisbury; sisters, Coraine Johnson and her husband, Travis, of Gainesville and Bridgette Henderson and her husband, Derrick, of Lakeland, Fla.; aunts and uncles, Sally Ibik of Pocomoke City, Teresa Clark, Gregory Coleman and John Coleman, all of Salisbury; nieces and nephews, Oscar R. Coleman III, Jaylen J. Hunter, Jairon Z. Johnson, Shabbasha Polk, Erick handy Jr., Ladericka Henderson, Derronjah Henderson and Derroniana Henderson.
He was preceded in death by grandmother, Bertha M. Jones; and great-grandfather, Roosevelt Dennis.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Allen Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. William Warren will officiate. Interment will be private.
Arrangements are in the care of Stewart Funeral Home by Holloway and Downey PA.

I talked to you once or twice about a year or so ago and I was delighted to receive a picture of you and your son. Our brother Larry got me in touch with you. Unfortunately, I did not get to know you as well as I would have liked to; however, the conversations we had were very pleasant and kind. I was happy to have made contact with my little brother and I hoped for more as I extended an invitation for you to visit me and my family in Florida. My daughter (Blair) who is currently attending UF in Gainesville was moving on the day of your passing. Regretfully, had I known where you were I would have been there for you. My prayers are with all of your close family and friends for the Lord to provide them soothing comfort and understanding.

Wow this is such a shock, You were My Uncle. And i have never had the chance to meet you or your Brother my (mom) Brenda your sister and Alfred Your brother only lived two hours away from you and they never knew you were that close wow! My prayer's go out to your family ....
