Samuel Rounds Obituary

Samuel Irvin Rounds, Sr.

Mardela Springs-Samuel Irvin Rounds, Sr., 88, of Mardela, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury with his family at his side. Born in Mardela, he was the son of the late George Rounds and Mary Rebecca Lynch Rounds.

He served in the US Navy from 1945-1947 and then farming with his father. Upon getting married in 1956, he worked his own farm until 1962, when he worked for 14 years as maintenance supervisor for the State of Maryland at Poplar Hill Prison. In 1976, he purchased Hill Top Market on Rt. 50 in Mardela which he ran with his wife and family for 29 ½ years, until retiring in 2004. He enjoyed gardening and his dog, "Buddy".

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Katherine S. Rounds; 3 children, Samuel Rounds, Jr. and his wife, Sharon, Cindy Hochmuth and her husband, Pat, and Sandra Shockley and her husband, Tommy, all of Mardela; 4 grandchildren, Melanie Schrey and her husband, Hilary of FL, Jamie Shockley and her friend, Jason of E. New Market, Matthew Hochmuth and Jessica Kile and her husband, Cody, all of Mardela; a great grandchild, Alex Willoughby of E. New Market; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Margaret Burkhardt and Martha Jennings.

A funeral service with military honors will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury with a visitation one hour prior. Rev. Donna Hinkle will officiate.

Contributions may be made in his memory to Snethen United Methodist Church, in care of Terry Budd, 3604 Delmar Road, Delmar, DE 19940.
