SYLVIA A. (WITTLER)
HORSTMAN
Sylvia A. (Wittler) Horstman, 88, of Ottoville, passed away at 8:23 a.m. on Sunday, December 1, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born December 13, 1935, in Ft. Jennings to the late Joseph F. and Mary (Schulte) Wittler. On August 29, 1953, she married William J. Horstman. He preceded her in death on May 30, 2002.
She is survived by three children: Kathy (Todd) Rhodes of Bellbrook, OH, Vaughn (Lynne) Horstman and Saundra (Bob) Klima, both of Ottoville; ten grandchildren: Matthew (Robin) Bernard, Daniel Bernard, Thomas (Brittany) Tanner, Lucianna (Tony) Pavel, Weston (Tory) Horstman, Alexander (Jill) Horstman, Zachary (Leanna) Horstman, Bradley (Leslie) Klima, Brett (Clara) Klima and Brittany (Dan) Albrinck; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Austin Bernard, Jah'meir E., William, Theodore, Sullivan and Henrick Horstman, Jace, Kennedy and Cohen Horstman, Jaxson and Preston Klima, Elayna and Everly Albrinck.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Klima; seven siblings: Alvera Stippich, Alma Schnipke, Eleanor Gordon, Albert Wittler, Irene Wittler, Agnes Fusselman and Alice Wannemacher; and sister-in-law, Jane Stallkamp.
Sylvia worked as a Secretary at Aeroquip for 27 years, owned/operated the Sno-Cone Drive-In Restaurant in Charloe and had also worked at Kresge's Department Store in Lima. Sylvia was a staple in the Ottoville community, where she cooked for many weddings and worked for the election board. She was also the first woman to serve on the Ottoville School Board. She was a blessed member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, its Altar Rosary Society, Catholic Ladies of Columbia, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was also a 4-H advisor. During her 71 years in Ottoville, Sylvia has blessed the Immaculate Conception Parish as head cook for the Church Fair for 12 years, sang in the choir, taught high school religion, and washed altar linens and purification cloths for almost 10 years.
Sylvia loved to winter at Lake Shore Park in Leesburg, FL, where she was president of the park for 3 years and secretary for 12 years. She was very active at her church in Leesburg, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister for 11 years and also sang in the folk choir. She loved reading, singing, doing puzzles, cooking and baking, especially making pies for the American Legion, becoming known as "The Pie Lady." Family and friends have been blessed by her many talents over the years.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville with Very Reverend George Mahas officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Ft. Jennings. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township. A scripture service will begin at 1:45 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
