Dan grew up on the family farm near Crawford, Colorado, and shared a lifelong bond with his childhood sweetheart, Helen (Becky) Klaseen. He attended Western State University in Gunnison until he left to run the farm after his father had a heart attack. Dan and Becky were married August 11, 1957, and celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this year. They lived most of their life in Nucla, where Dan worked in the uranium mines for 13 years before holding various positions at the local power plant until retirement. They moved to Grand Junction in 2015.
Dan was known for his love of the outdoors, photography, pie-making proficiency, his spectacular garden and the joy he found in spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He never lost his playful spirit, often teasing with the delight and mischief of a little kid. He spent his life working hard, while also cherishing his family and daily walks that almost always included lively conversations with friends and neighbors he encountered along the way.
Dan is survived by Becky, his children, Cliff (Judy), Phyllis (Sam Reiser), James (Deidre O'Callaghan) and Lyle (Cindy); grandchildren, Dana (Glen Kohler), Matt, Elizabeth (Sam Farley) and Kevin; great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Tenley Kohler, Emory Potts and Gage Costisick. He is preceded in death by Norman and Harriet Hammond and his brother Howard (Bee).
A celebration of Dan's life will be held Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at the home of James Hammond and Deidre O'Callaghan, 660 33 3/4 Road, Clifton, Colorado. Burial services will be held at the cemetery in Crawford on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice.
Dan's passing leaves a hole in our hearts. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
