Daniel Sukle Obituary

Daniel John Sukle
October 11, 1941 - October 16, 2024
Dan was born to Helen and John Sukle on October 11, 1941 in Gunnison, Colorado. The family moved to Delta in 1949. Dan attended Delta High School where he participated in wrestling and football for four years. He was elected Student Body President in his senior year, 1959. He then went on to the University of Colorado where he earned a B.S. in engineering in 1963 and a Ph.D. in physics in 1968. He met his life partner Maggie while working on his dissertation.
Leaving research behind, Dan became a teacher at Front Range Community College often writing and illustrating his own text materials for the students. At the request of the nursing program, Dan developed and taught a Physics for Nurses class. Front Range awarded him their Master Teacher Award.
Many spring breaks were spent hiking and back packing in Utah with Maggie. Cross-country skiing filled winter weekends. Later they took up white water kayaking with multi-day river trips in Utah and Idaho. Camping with his extended family was a summer staple. At home he could be found in his garage engaged in wood working and metal working projects.
After an initial reluctance to adopt a stray dog hanging around campus: "You can bring her home, but I wouldn't," he became quite attached to their dogs. When the City of Boulder moved to limit off-leash dog access on Open Space, Dan became a founding member of FIDOS: Friends Interested in Dogs on Open Space.
Dan died in Boulder on October 16, 2024. He is survived by his wife Maggie Boswell, siblings Bob of Ithaca, NY, Jim of Delta, Sherri Potter of Idaho Springs, Tim of Parker and Mike of Denver, their spouses and many nieces and nephews.
He will be missed by many.
Donations in his memory can be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation or the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.

I was one of Dr. Dan's students in the mid 70's. I still remember some of his illustrated test questions and his real life applications of physics. He made the subject matter engaging and interesting.

With rue my heart is laden
For golden friends I had,
For many a rose-lipt maiden
And many a lightfoot lad.

By brooks too broad for leaping
The lightfoot boys are laid;
The rose-lipt girls are sleeping
In fields where roses fade.
