Albert Schum Obituary

Schum, Albert "Ike"

Rochester: Passed on to eternal life on March 6, 2015. Ike was 89 years young, and died in his sleep after a long struggle with several strokes. Bernice, his wife of 65 years, was at his side. Ike was the proud co-owner of Schum's Florist. He was active in the local florist community, including the Florist Delivery Pool, Associated Florists of Rochester, and Teleflora. Ike was passionate about flowers and the "greenhouse". The flower arrangements he created helped many families in the Rochester area celebrate their various family festivities. He loved his work and worked hard to take care of his family. Ike was also active with the Knights of Columbus, a lifelong member of St. Ambrose Church, and served as a Supply Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. Ike has made a real impact on others-- his many kindnesses, leadership, good humor, and significant level of generosity. This is reflected in his family.

Ike retired at the age of 84 because of health issues, but truly missed his work. Remarkably, Bernice and he became sweethearts again. It was very special to watch their love for each other blossom in their "golden years". Ike was very proud of all of his children, grandchildren, and his 2 great-grandchildren who would always bring a smile to his face.

The family would like to thank the special folks who work at the VA, especially Diane, Kelly, and Barb. Heartfelt thanks to his aides at home, Dilenda, Cynthia, Terri, Alison, and Claudette. Ike was able to remain in his home because of all their help. As Ike's life was devoted to the positive impact flowers can have on people's lives, please send any flowers to someone you know, a senior living facility, or another place where there are individuals who might need a smile.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 14th at 10:30 AM at Peace of Christ Parish at St. Ambrose Church. A Celebration of Life buffet lunch in his honor for family, friends and florists will be held at Davinci's Restaurant, Stone Ridge Plaza, Greece, following the Mass. To the Schum family.
We were sadden to hear of Ike's passing. He was a wonderful man and always had a smile. He helped start the delivery co-op and many many years in the florist industry along with our grandfather and fathers. So sorry for your loss and you are in our thought and prayers.

Dear Bernice and family,
I will never forget Ike and his bubbly personality. His beautiful flowers were the "hallmark" of my life from early times as a young girl to the present. His floral arrangements were used by my family and myself as messengers of our happiness, joy and sometimes sadness. Beginning with a darling "Bunny Corsage" for Easter Sunday Mass, to wrist corsages for prom, to the gorgeous flowers he arranged for my wedding 50 years ago, to endless bouquets ordered to remember family and friends - he made each one special. They were truly an expression of our love. Whenever I would call to place an order, he was always so happy to come to the phone to say "Hi" and catch up on each other's family news. Ike had a wonderful gift that he shared with all of us and he will be truly missed. The special memories he created will stay in our hearts forever. Lou and I send our love and condolences for your loss. We will keep you all in our prayers!
Love, Sharon & Lou

Ike was an old YOUNG friend to John and I. His many smiles will always be remembered by us. I will never forget the first time I meet Ike and his wife at a Flower Show (1970), they have been like family every sence. Blessings to the whole family and much love.

Dear Schum Family,
Ike was a wonderful man - such a hard worker around the "pool" and for the florist industry. It was always a pleasure being with him at meetings or at florist affairs. Thanks for sharing him. Jaren Miner and the last McGreger group

Very much like Ike's kindness and generosity,In Ike's floral arrangements you could not add another flower.Ike was so unique and special in that regard and I many times received this over the top treatment from him with various pieces for different occasions. Not only was I blessed to be on the receiving end of his art. I had the pleasure of working for Him and Dave at the flower shop. There were many lessons to be learned about perserverence and hard work along with much happiness and laughter. This was such a special time in my life and the shop was such a special place.Thankyou Ike as I will always cherish the memories and will never forget. To the Schum Family I'm so sorry for your Great Loss.

"Uncle" Ike was a Big-Hearted Person who loved people and especially bringing joy to their lives through his flowers. He was a devoted family man and treated everyone with kindness and respect. We will always cherish the memories we have of visits at his home, at the greenhouse and swimming in his pool with our children. He will be sorely missed by many!
