I stumbled across Alex's Obituary after having some time to look at old friends from my Coast Guard days. I served with Alex at CG Station Marathon in the Florida Keys in late 1980's. Alex was a good Sailor, and it was clear to all who worked with him how much he enjoyed his job. I remember standing radio watch with him in the early morning hours when all but he and I slept. Alex was always drinking coffee and singing silly songs to make our time pass more easily. Rest in Peace Alex.

Dear Elyjiw Family, I am an old friend of Alex. I worked with him back in the late 90s in Rochester, NY when i was at JAM Inc. before I left for Africa. I have always had him on my mind and decided to see if I could find him because I had come across a project that I knew he might enjoy working on. I struggled to remember the spelling of his last name and then it finally flashed back to me. I typed it into Google and found this memorial instead. I am truly saddened to hear of his passing. We worked together for only a relatively short time, but he and I truly connected. I met his wife once, but I don't remember her name - surely she will remember the crazy guy that went off to southern Africa to start a business with a training company...yep that was me (Akin). Anyway Alex has moved on and I know he will be as special there as he was here.
Many blessings to you and your family,
Akin Odulate

There isn't anyone who has the ability to touch your soul upon meeting you for the first time as Alex could.
Alex had and innate ability to reach inside of you and discover your heart song and which strings to pluck to make your song sweeter.

"Wistful musings
welcome solitude.
Hello, old friend.
I've wrapped myself in you
again.
Guitar sounds sift in to remember...
a taste?
a smell?
Nostalgic memories just out of reach
vaguely comforting
hint of hope
speak of simpler times
when my world was new
and everything was possible."

Alexander Elyjiw
I am from the strength of my sister’s braids, from HOGs and the Coast Guard, the ski patrol and the great photo giant.
I am from a home where my mother always smiled, from the Ukraine, to Canada, to swimming with the dolphins and whistling wildly down the mountains.
From the sandy beaches, racing against the tide with my brothers, racing against time with my God, racing to make the most of every second on this earth.
I am from camping and the love of the great outdoors, from Zenon and Daria and Elyjiw.
I am from the wanderer and the lover, from a multicolored view of the world, to a multi millionaire attitude on life.
From Carpe Diem and “be careful of that one.”
I am from the beauty of my nieces’ smiles, the grace of my nephews’ stride...
The womb and the warrior, from Varenyky to the delicate hunt for mushrooms.
From the child Lucas who is the greatest warrior, the photographic memory of my father’s lens, the flag that I fly in all the countries that bear my name
I am from the reminiscence of every tongue that speaks my name, from every roaring wave of my manifestation, I am from so many moments of beauty upon this great adventure we call life –
go … seize the day.

I just found the e-mail notifying former HS classmate of Alex’s passing. It brings with it a great sense of sadness. It was nice to be able to reconnect at our last reunion after too many years. I remember the days in middle and high school of going up to Alex’s house for the afternoon. I had the joy recently of a new grandchild, but things like this bring back the sense of our own mortality. My heart goes out to all of Alex’s family.

Today our friend Alex is up in heaven.
His gift of life in death's been given.
He gave all he had in life and in death.
Lives have been saved when he breathed his last breath.
Bodies are now healed and others made strong,
while we have just memories and fight to carry on.
We'll forever remember his laughter, his joy,
his love and devotion to Lucas, his dear boy.
We miss, we love you our colleague and friend.
You were truly unselfish right up to the end.
Rest in peace, Alex...

Alex it was a Pleasure and Honor. I regret that we won't get to make those turns together this year. Or the Euro trip. May the hoarfrost greet your first chair and may you find powder on sweep. May the warm sun be at your back and a cool breeze in your face always.
Sandy and Family- words can never express the sadness, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Alex was a true kindred spirit and I will miss him always.

Alex,
I'm going to miss you a lot my bro. Always enjoyed what you had to say and had the utmost respect for you. The love you had for your son is something all fathers should compare themselves to. See you on the other side my friend.

The shock and sadness of Alex's passing are magnified exponentially by the manner in which he chose to live: the passion and energy he threw at life, the respect he showed to all those fortunate enough to make his acquaintance, and the love and devotion he expressed for his family.
Alex,
Thank you for sharing countless laughs and smiles. You will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

"What would I recommend to others? How about that in the end, what you are left with are your memories. Make some good ones. And he or she who dies smiling - wins." - Alex Elyjiw, 2002

Alex, a man with so much humor and energy to touch everyone he met. It was great to see his big smile at the high school reunions. "Accomplishments? Spent youth in pusuit of adventures and memories which should serve me well should I be lucky and live long enough to achieve senility." (A.E., 2002) He appreciated life and lived it fully. My thoughts are with his family. Alex will be missed.

Sincerest condolences to you all. A part of my heart is broken. Alex was an irresistable personality in high school, whom I remember fondly to this day. What a gem. I still remember his flashing smile. I am so very sorry for your loss of this lovely man.

Alex was an intelligent, polite and funny guy. I clearly remember a road trip with him after he recorded some video footage of my band back in the early '90s. He clearly enjoyed talking about his days in the Coast Guard. My prayers and best wishes go out to George and the rest of the Elyjiw family.

I enjoyed working with Alex for several years, and talking about the good things in life whenever we got the chance. His incredible love for Lucas, his happiness with Sandy, his excitement about riding motorcycles again, I saw his enjoyment of life expanding over the past few years. Alex will be missed by many, but Ellen and I will keep happy memories of him forever.
