Merola Family - I was stunned and grieved when I heard of Coach Merola passing away. He was like a father to me during my days at Mooney. Though we lost touch during my college days, I always held fond memories of him. Coach was tough when neccessary and gentle went it counted. He had a heart as big as the sky. I will sincerely miss him. My prayers go out the family.

My condolences to the Coach's family. He made an enormous impact on my life. The lasting example he set was you shouldn't chase the "fluff" in life but put your head down and focus on the right goals. I hope God is ready for Coach Merola!
I think I can still name everyone in the Coach's First Mooney Football team from 1964.

Circa 1984 Dave "The Rave" has a great memory of you as my gym coach at FHS. While playing anouncer you introduced me coming to bat. You placed a dollar bill on home plate, challenging me for a home run. I gave you one and collected said bill Pete Rose style. RIP Coach

My deepest condolences go out to Mrs. Merola, Terri, Dan, John, and the entire Merola family. I not only had the pleasure of being taught and coached by Coach Merola but also was honored to have had the opportunity to learn from him my first few years as a coach at Fairport. He is part of the reason I am the man I am today. He was loved and will be missed. Thank you for sharing your husband, father, and grandfather with the rest of us. I hope you find some peace knowing that he touched so many lives and how they are better people because of him. RIP Coach.

June 30, 2015

Anthony was a person who had a profound and always positive affect on my life and many other youths who grew up in Caledonia. He taught us to love sports, to play clean, to always show good sportsmanship, to compete to win, but never hang our heads in defeat. He always would find a way for us young, would-be athletes to somehow get in the game with our elder heroes like Pooch, maybe by having us play center in football sandlot games, hiking for both sides. His words and example taught us more than even our excellent coaches, Bob Freeman and Les Eaton. I called him a couple of years ago to tell how much he meant to me as a friend, a coach, a mentor, and an example. I'm sure there are literally hundreds of former players in Mt. Morris, Mooney, and Fairport who have the same life-long memories and respect for what Pooch taught them. I send my deepest condolences to Josie, Anthony's children and all his family, friends and loved ones. His life was a blessing for which I--and many who loved him--are grateful. I loved listening to Pooch, Coach Santini and my dad sitting around talking football when I was young. I enjoyed the Mooney football games my dad used to take my brother and me and watch Coach Merola's great teams. The best was going back to the school and celebrating with his team after a big win over AQ. RIP Pooch and my condolences to his family.
