Dorothy Chadwick Obituary

85, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Passed away peacefully on December 29, 2010 in Rochester, NY of respiratory failure due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dottie's husband Dave passed away in 2006, and she is survived by her two sons; David Chadwick of Ashburn, VA and Daniel Chadwick of Scottsville, NY; five grandchildren: Dan Ross; and Michael, Jeri, Davey, and Kyle Chadwick; her two daughters-in-law, Ethel and Kathy Chadwick; and her two sisters, Ruth Newton of Batavia, NY and Catherine Ball of Warsaw, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

Dottie was born in Titusville, PA on August 14, 1925. During World War II Dottie worked at Curtiss-Wright in Buffalo, as a "Rosie the Riveter", manufacturing P-40 Tomahawk Army Air Corps fighter planes that helped win the war in the Pacific. After the war, she met Dave Chadwick, the love of her life, who had returned from wartime Navy service in the South Pacific. The two were married in Miami Beach on January 4, 1949, and lived there with Dave working as a restaurant cook and Dottie as a waitress.

In the early 1950's, Dottie and Dave moved to the Buffalo, NY area where Dave became a partner/owner of Capital Heat, Inc. in Depew, NY. Dottie and Dave settled in the Town of Tonawanda (near Buffalo) in 1954, remaining there until she and Dave retired to Sarasota in 1981.

In Sarasota Dottie was a realtor for several years, she was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, bowling leagues, and a volunteer for over 20 years at the local "Meals on Wheels" organization. Dave passed away in 2006, and Dottie remained in Sarasota until March 2010, when she re-located to Scottsville, NY to live with her younger son and daughter-in-law.

For those that knew Dottie, she will be remembered for her spunk, drive, energy, and love of life. Dottie was not one to hide her emotions or opinions, yet she loved to be around others, especially her family and good friends. Dottie approached her endeavors with great enthusiasm, and that spirit always motivated those around her. She never wanted to be a burden to others, and it took great effort to persuade her to move to Rochester with her younger son and his family. Her love of life will always sustain us. Written with love by her sons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dottie's name to the American Lung Association.

Dear Dan,Ethel,Dave & Kathy,
We will miss Dottie very much, but were fortunate to see her at Mother's Day and at her 85th birthday party. Dottie & Dave were adopted parents and grandparents for my family. Now she is with Richard in heaven. God bless you always.
Love,
Fran, Annie & Katie

I am so sorry for your loss... I knew your mother in Tonowanda as I cleaned house on Sat. for her best friend, Jane Moylan. I too moved to Sarasota & Dottie & Dave came to my wedding Sept 13, 1986. She was a spunky, fun lady. I found out some interesting things from the obituary & I thank you for sharing it with us.

I am Carol & Gabor's cousin who lives in Plantation, FL. Just to let the Chadwick family know how much my husband and I will miss our visits with Dottie when we came to Sarasota. She immediately became a best friend to us with her warmth and caring. It proves how "one little light" can shine very far indeed.

My dear neighbor, you are missed. You have been Dr Dottie, Grandma Dottie. You were always there when we needed you. You introduced me as your adopted daughter, so that is the way I will sign it. Will love from your adopted daughter & son. Carol & Gabor

She was more a "sister"to me than a friend. Good times, bad times, all will be remembered with a smile. Luv you Dot. Clare Hotchkiss (Tonawanda, NY)

We have known Dottie it seems for a life time. We always had a great time together, bowling, apple picking, church work, and partying. She will be greatly missed.

I am so glad I had the occasion to meet Dottie with whom I played Scrabble along with her daughter-in-law, one of my closest friends, Ethel. Dottie was indeed full of life and spunk. To Dan, whom I know, and all of the family missing her at this time, may you carry her legacy into all you do and enjoy in this life. I am sure she will be missed...a special lady was she. Praying His Shalom peace and comfort keep you and yours in this season of loss.
