Jim was a history student of mine at Eastridge HS where he was an outstanding student athlete and an even better person. I moved out of Rochester with family shortly after he graduated but remember him telling me he was continuing his education at Cornell U. (I had three siblings who attended Cornell and knew he would succeed there).
To Jim´s family & friends, I am saddened to hear of his death. He certainly made this world a better place & left quite a legacy. May he rest in peace.

Tweeted this today and felt I should share it here - Jim was an amazing guy:
Noticed this bench outside Eastridge HS a few weeks ago.
Mr. Nowak was my teacher at Fairport HS. He taught history as well as a bunch of social studies electives like Eastern Religions. He was one of those teachers who stuck with you. Mr. Nowak was high energy, passionate, engaging and he had a way of inspiring students to embrace topics without it feeling laborious. Years after I graduated I heard on the news that he had passed away in a tragic accident while in Africa. I knew he had attended EHS because his plaque is on their wall of fame, but I just learned about this bench. It was a surprise. Brought a smile to my face. I´m glad he will be remembered.

I never met Mr. Nowak. But he was the mentor of my mentor, Kyle Hargrave, a history teacher at Fairport High School. To see how James Nowak changed the world is nothing but inspiring. He somehow left a full legacy after just 59 years on this Earth. There is no doubt that his legacy lives on. I am so lucky to have been educated on this wonderful man, even if it is 11 years after he has passed. R.I.P. Mr. Nowak.

Mr. Nowak was my teacher 24 years ago.
I was a senior in the spring of 1996 and was in his Eastern Religions class.
He challenged me to think and question.
He was the kind of teacher and person who impacted my life and the lives of others in ways that go well beyond a high school classroom.
Our world needs more people like Jim Nowak.

Mr Novak was one of the few teachers who really "got" my kids. Neither was an easy student. My daughter is now a high school teacher herself, and Mr Novak is one of her main reasons for wanting to be a teacher, as well as a model for how to be a superb one. Which she is. So his gift keeps giving. I hope he knows.

Jim was an exceptional human being. He was the most dedicated, caring, unselfish, teacher I ever knew. He deeply wanted to make a difference in the lives of his students. Beyond his teaching career he dedicated his life to making a difference in lives of kids and families in Africa. In the short time he lived, he did more to make the world a better place than most people could ever dream.

I remember being in Mr. Nowak's Religions of the East class during my junior year at FHS. When he asked us to do snow meditations, I thought he was absolutely crazy. When he asked us to meditate over candles, I was convinced that someone would inadvertently set fire to the entire building. I have to say though, we all survived and came out of it a little more aware of the diverse world that surrounded us. I came out of it with a deep love of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, one of the many books in the big tub of philosophical books he allowed us to read during class. The Prophet has helped me throughout my life, giving me constant guidance and encouragement.
I saw Mr. Nowak after graduating from college and let him know that I was studying development and was particularly interested in West Africa. He encouraged me to continue my studies and to start working in this region. This year, I visited Africa for the first time. I was able to do research on climate change in both Morocco and Togo. I couldn't help but remember Mr. Nowak during my trip to Togo and wish that I could have shared this experience with him.
I feel so blessed to have had him as my teacher. He taught me that acceptance and love are world values.

I was very saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I first met Jim when I was on the freshman football team at Eastridge High. I remember him teaching me how to tackle someone by going for their legs. He nearly broke my knees. He always had a great sense of humor. My memories of him are of a gifted football player and wrestler. I last ran into him at the airport about six years ago and he looked the same as when I knew him in high school. Still full of life and excited about his new project in Africa. I always wondered why such good people leave us so soon when they have so much to offer. Jim was and still is a giver, someone we should all try to emulate. He was one of a kind. There is a special place in heaven for him. My prayers go out to Jim's family. God Bless You, Jim.

Fun, spirited, caring, happy, energetic, helpful, dependable, inspiring....just a few of his many qualities that made Jim the special man he was.
When my daughter had a void to fill in the summer of 2006....I called Jim. He said....I'll take her to Kenya! She can teach and help me with my project...so off she went. And what an experience she had.
Together, we were part of the Fairport School Family for many years. Most recently...just this past Oct. we were one of the last pools he closed before heading off to Kenya. He was so excited to get to work over there....he brought his most recent album and showed us all the progress since my daughter was there.
Since we recently moved to Fl. my daughter, my husband and I took a walk on the beach recalling our experiences with Jim as the memorial went on at St. John Fisher. We shed some tears as we looked across the Atlantic thinking about him. But soon smiled thinking about all he accomplished in Kenya.
May you as a family find peace in knowing just how many lives he touched.

I met Jim through our anti-war activism at the start of the Iraq invasion. I so admired how rock solid he was in his conviction yet so tender in his humanity. And he always brought students with him to meetings or rallies, gently leading them, by his own example, into a life of courage and passion.
Where does all that vitality and compassion go when such a man as Jim is so suddenly, so unbearably gone? I wish I knew.

I've returned to read all the wonderful things said by so many people who's lives were touched by Jim. He had a way of making each one he met feel special. He was the only one who ever referred to me as 'Danny', and after reading all the posts here, it seems I was the only one who called my Jimmy...his favor to me returned I guess. I could not make it back to Rochester to offer what I could to his family, but Jimmy was on my mind and in my prayers that day and will return to them often. His students were so lucky to experience his passions and his friends to share his space. I'll miss Jimmy.

Like many others who have written, I, too, was fortunate to have Mr. Nowak while I was a student at FHS. As my homeroom teacher for two years, my sociology teacher, and my consumer economics teacher, he quite literally, taught me about everything from group norms ( we watched The Breakfast Club as a case study!) and child development to how to buy a used car and how to write a check. He had the BEST stories about hitchhiking across the US but always started every story with, "You should never hitchhike, but let me tell you about this one time...."
But the memory of Mr. Nowak that means the most to me was one that I didn't even experience directly. A couple of years after I graduated, during my sophomore year at Cornell ( which BTW, he wrote my application recommendation letter), my mom was hit by a drunk driver. Her car was totaled and she was seriously injured -lucky to be alive. Mr. Nowak heard about the accident, and arranged for the FHS Students Against Drunk Driving to come to our house, bring her flowers, and offer their help. That act of kindness meant so much to her and has never been forgotten by our family. Thank you, Mr. Nowak.

Jim Nowak changed my life the moment I met him. It began when I had him as a teacher for his Eastern Religions class. His energy captivated his students the second he walked into the room. I've never met someone so passionate about learning, teaching, and life itself. He was my main inspiration for becoming a teacher. He reached out to all of his students and made sure they knew he truly cared about each and every one of them. Although I know I will never reach it, my goal is to be able to someday have that same kind of impact on my students.
In college I got back in touch with Jim through his wonderful daughter and my good friend, Michon. I was blessed with the opportunity to spend time with and care for her amazing children and heard about all of the wonderful things Jim was doing in Africa. I then started meeting with Jim to talk about his work in Kenya and decided that I was going to go over to Africa with him. He started teaching me Swahili so that I would be able to communicate with the children. While I have not made it over to Africa yet, I plan to go in the future to help continue his mission and dreams.
The world has lost a true hero in Jim's passing. I feel so lucky to have had the chance to know him. Thank you Jim for everything you did for Fairport High School, our community, Africa, and for me. You have changed the world.

This is "Seebs" from Seattle. Betty, Paul, Nancy, Caroline, Zach, Michon and Stephen -- I only learned last night of our very great loss. My heartfelt sympathy and best wishes go to each of you. My life was touched by Jim, and so by each of you. Our years together at Cornell were special, and perhaps the best summer of my life was working for Nowak Brother Pools! My family so enjoyed Jim's visits here to Seattle. Jim's bright smile, zest for life, and love of his fellow man were his signature features. I first met Jim when my life was particularly challenging. My first impression of him was that he was a modern renaissance man. Just talking to him was inspiring and soothing. As I got to know him my respect for him grew- he was smart, intriguing, unassuming, and comfortable in his own skin. He was genuine and giving- a loving father and grandfather, a good soul, and a dedicated helper for those less fortunate. I know he will be missed by many people but I am confident that his impression will last a lifetime.

Jim Nowak was larger than life! He was a whirlwind of warm, positive energy.
His teaching techniques were far from the 'norm.' Because he felt his pupils might not have an 'older' person of whom they might ask anything, Jim brought his Mom into the classroom. Lucky Mrs Nowak and lucky the students! Once Jim lead a discussion dealing with 'hippies' and invited me along to tell about my life on a commune back in the '60's.
Among my sweetest personal memories are the decades of 6 AM Friday morning breakfasts; we would hash out whatever school or family 'stuff' was happening. There must be hundreds of students who remember when Jim and Dennis Bielewicz, FHS Librarian, WERE the Blues Brothers and performed to 'Soul Man.' They wore black suits, sunglasses and fedora hats. Their dancing made for side-splitting hilarity.
And then there was Jim's generosity. One Saturday he and Zack moved a half-ton stove into my old house. Jim gave countless 'pots' of honey from his own bees. On his retirement Jim was clearing his office and handed me a poster of the Dalai Lama because he remembered my lifelong love of Tibet.
Jim was one of the MOST altruistic people I have ever known. He chose not to wait until 'retirement age' to follow his bliss. He left FHS early to build the school and clinic in Kenya. Marcia Steffer, an Art teacher at FHS, and Jim cooked up a brilliant idea to have her students paint portraits Kenyan pupils from photos Jim would take. Then Jim would carry these portraits back to Kenya. Can you imagine the excitement of each pupil as he or she received his very own portrait painted by a teenager in America?
Not only did Jim give of himself, but he encouraged others to be the best they could. Many of us gave gladly to his projects, first to build the school, one room at a time, and then for tuition at that school and for scholarships, especially for nurses because their clinic would need them.
Jim loved to hear and to tell storiea. One of the best stories was the one that Jim DID: building the school and clinic in Kenya. These are not a dream, a fiction, but a TRUE story.
Jim's infectious enthusiasm gladdened our world. He is too soon gone.
Last Friday when I learned the awfulness of Jim's death I was shattered. Now, a week later, I try to remember that man whose joy and generosity overflowed, whose compassion is evidenced in Kenya and whose wondrous friendship I shall not forget.

My favorite memory of Jim was from a SUPA Sociology seminar at the SU campus. As we sat around the table and were asked to introduce ourselves to each other and to the guest speaker, Jim said, "Hi, I'm Jim Nowak, from Fairport High. I'm opposed to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and I hope you are, too." Jim always made us smile, and more importantly, think about the world and our place in it. He was an original, a free spirit, and a teacher, in the truest sense of the word. Condolences to his family and friends.

I wrote him a letter about 14 years ago, telling him what a difference he had made in my life. He wrote back. I am SO glad I wrote him. Jim was a huge inspiration in high school. So many people looked up to him and loved him. The world was a better place with his smiling face in it. He was the best teacher I have ever had, hands down.
I had lost touch with him after high school, but thought of him often, and knew of his great work in Kenya. I felt at ease just knowing he was out there somewhere in the world... and now I am trying to find peace knowing he is still out there, we just can't see him now in his physical form.
He taught us to go out and DO something in the world, and he was my inspiration to become a social worker. I am now planning a trip to Kenya, to help with Building Futures- I know Jim would only ask that people ACTED now, and didn't just sit around and be sad about his death.
See you again, someday, Jim.

Sitting on a bench overlooking the pond Jim created for Zach, he pointed out birds in the sky and fish breaking the surface in front of us. We talked about life, I asked stupid questions, he answered them gently, as he always did. For any kid who felt "different", for any kid who didn't quite fit in, for anyone who's path was not straightforward but instead crooked and convoluted, Jim was, simply put, important. High school is a time for teen angst, drama, self discovery. It can be fun or a struggle, kind or cruel. But whoever you were, whatever your experience, all you had to do was walk into the most cluttered classroom at FHS and everything else melted away. Jim was important.

I was out of town when I heard the news that Jim had died in an auto accident in Kenya. I prayed that somehow it was a media mistake. This is SO WRONG.
Even after I read it myself, it still does not seem possible. My heart goes out to his family. I am sorry that I cannot be in Rochester for his memorial. I will be there in spirit - to celebrate Jim's life, a life cut too short and too soon. While Jim's life with us has been short on time, it has been long - and wide and deep and full - of more love and compassion, wit and warmth, trials and triumphs, memories sweet and bittersweet than most of us can ever hope for in one lifetime.
I was fortunate to have known Jim since grade school. He always had a smile and a friendly word for me or anyone else who crossed his path.
Our paths crossed again as Jim was retiring from his teaching career. Since then, we've shared many stories/memories over coffee, lunch and lots of email. You could not help but get caught up in his enthusiasm for life. His love for his family, his children and grandchildren came across in his words and his deeds. I cannot begin to imagine the painful loss and shock that his entire family must be dealing with at this time.
To Jim's mother and family, I add my deepest sympathy at the devastating loss of such a great human being.

Never think that educators do not have a huge impact that can be life changing. Mr. Nowak changed my view of myself as a learner and I am forever grateful to him. I remember his passion for the book "Love" by Leo Buscaglia. I thought his quote appropriate: He told others: “It’s not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of personkind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.” Leo Buscaglia Foundation
God Bless Jim and his family. I will keep you in my prayers. Shiela Scarantino ~ Class of 82 FHS

Jim was our paperboy when I was a kid living in East Irondequoit in the 1960s. What a remarkable man whose vision and dedication achieved so much! This is a tragic loss to family, friends, and... humanity.

Jim was a dear friend of mine for over thirty-five years. I will never forget all the many kindnesses he showed me over the years. He had a charism about him that is rare and which allowed him to have a powerful influence on so many of the people he came into contact with. I add my condolences to the many which are being given to Jim's mom, Betty, to his former wife and loving friend, Bonnie Karl, to their three children and three grandchildren, to Jim's siblings, and to all the people who loved him and who will never forget him.
Rest in Peace, dear, dear Jim.

Jim was my best friend growing up on Walzer Road in Irondequoit. Together we roamed the woods of Titus and shared the many joys of a simpler time. We were "blood brothers" and fellow Boy Scouts. He was one of the hardest workers I have ever known. My love and heart goes out to all his family...

Mr Nowak gave both my children a reason to go to school, and inspired my daughter to become a teacher. Such a great man!

Mr. Nowak was instrumental in making the "Fairport Angel Walk" (a memorial walk in memory of the 5 Fairport Girls killed in 2007)happen and I am forever grateful to him for that. He actually was the first person I spoke to after I simply had the "idea" for the walk. He gave me his insight and lead me in the right direction. I was blessed to have him as a teacher, but his impact on my life was far beyond the classroom. I am so thankful for his inspiration.

To the Nowak Family,
I am deeply saddened about Jim's passing. He was a true friend and a wonderful person. I also regret that I will not be able to attend his memorial service. I am in Florida and the blizzard weather conditions have made booking a flight impossible.
I luckily was able to see him last spring. We had a drink at the Winfield Grill and agreed that I would come to Kenya last fall (regtretfully I did not follow up).
I will fondly remember installing above groung pools with Jim (The Polish Shovel), Sly Bell (Jim Seidel)and myself (The Sand Man). Hard work but fun.
Only the good die young is so appropriate.

Mr. Nowak touched my life deeply, and I am a better person for having been lucky enough to have him as a teacher. He truly enjoyed each and every day teaching at FHS, and he made learning so appealing. I will be forever grateful that he was able to perform my wedding and share our special day. He was a wonderful man and he will be deeply missed.

Mr. Nowak was one of those teachers that made one of the biggest impacts on your life. He opened my eyes to the world, he introduced me to what I consider now my favorite book Siddhartha in his Religions of the East class, and he was a teacher who was ALWAYS there if you wanted to talk to him. He and another teacher would take me and my friend to breakfast some mornings at a diner in East Rochester and fight over who would cover our food.
He was a man that will never be forgotten, by anyone who was lucky enough to have his presence in their life. He will be greatly missed and always on my mind.

I am absolutely crushed over Jim's passing. As has been echoed time and again in these messages, he inspired me more than he ever knew. In every day life, he reminded me to live every moment. To be present. Beyond that he encouraged continued learning by, as he always put it, "getting the hell outta here". The last time I saw him he met me for coffee after I had left college with one semester before graduation. He reassured me that life is not a straight path and I would find my own course. I only wish I had kept in better touch with him so he knew more about my journey! I'll miss you Jim. Namaste.

I worked at FHS for 10 years and had the pleasure of seeing Jim daily. He was the kindess, most caring man and such a wonderful teacher. Both my sons had him as their teacher and he was their favorite. He touched so many lives. I am honored to have known him. He will be missed.

I graduated from Fairport in '88. I always made a point of scheduling my electives to have him as a teacher as much as I could. Mr. Nowak taught me so much, not just academics but great life lessons as well. He truly cared about his students- he could always tell when I was down or if something was bothering me and he always made a point to ask about. He didn't mind my fiesty behavior and willingness to debate- in fact he welcomed it! I think about him all the time-and, I always thought to write him and thank him, I regret now that I never did. I am now a teacher myself and have shared Mr. Nowak with my students as well as other teachers. I have attended trainings where they are teaching us "new" methods of teaching and relating to students- but, in those trainings I always realize that Mr. Nowak was WAY ahead of the game!! He was already doing the stuff they teach in these trainings! What an amazing person, who went on to do amazing things- I will never forget him!

Jim had a profound influence on all three of my children, as well as on my husband and myself. His charismatic personality and his commitment to making the world a better place were awe-inspiring. When my youngest son was a senior in high school (Jim's last year of teaching), he and his friends formed a "Peace Club" and Jim was their faculty advisor. He helped them stage marches and concerts and truly showed them that they could make a difference in the world. This past July, Jim officiated at my older son's wedding, and my husband and I finally got a chance to meet him. Within minutes of shaking hands with him, we felt like life-long friends. Jim had that kind of warmth. I am so saddened by his passing.

Mr. Nowak made a difference in my life. I remember him as being a teacher who cared about every student...and the students knew it. If everyone aspired to be just a little bit like him, the world would be a much better place. Thank you, Mr. Nowak.

I knew Jim briefly in 1971 - I was a college student in Syracuse and he was at Cornell. Even though I never saw him again after that, he made an impression on me. I knew he would do great things with his life. The world will miss him.

Jim was a great competitor and I recall sharing mat time with him as one of the best experiences of my high school career. He was a class act. I am not surprised to hear of his work later in life. My best wishes to his family and friends.
