Mr. Hickey was the kindest and gentlest of souls. I cannot think of a more appropriate day for the celebration of his life than St. Valentine's Day.
My memories of him center around my early teenage years, when as our neighbor, he was a bright light. He was genuinely interested in the well-being of others. I will miss him dearly, and know that he has a special place in heaven!

My mother just notified me of Mr. Hickey's passing. Clearly in focus came the afternoon in the late 1960's when I met Mr. and Mrs. Hickey. I had gone to their house to collect my younger sister, Ann, a friend of Claire's, and Mr. Hickey answered the door. I introduced myself, and with Old World Charm, he took me in to meet his wife. They spoke kindly of my mother who was active in the parish they both attended, asked about my college studies, and upon my leaving, he picked a white gardenia from a bush growing in the hall and gave it to me. I've never forgotten his gentleness, his voice and his spirit ~ Truly one of God's own.

I had the priviledge of visiting Uncle Jerry on a rare trip to the Phoenix area on Wednesday, January 28th, two days before he died. It was a wonderful visit for both of us and my wife, Robin. I am so glad that we had the chance to say hello and God Bless. Uncle Jerry made a simple observation to us, which reflected his faith and insight. "So many people say they want to go to heaven, but no one wants to die to get there."
It is ironic that the same day that the last of the Hickey brothers died, the parent company of Hickey-Freeman filed for bankruptcy!
Say hello in heaven for us to your brothers and sisters and your mom and dad. We won't see many families like them again. Like the company, they always "Kept the Quality Up!"

Jerry and I used to pray the rosary together after the daily 12:10 mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral. He was very devoted to Our Lady, and such a wonderful role model for us all. He is now enjoying everlasting happiness in heaven. God bless you Jerry. You are dearly missed...
